Hey just wondering if there were any woodworkers here. I am just learning how to turn stuff like vases and pens, a lot harder than I thought. Getting those sharp tools caught in a knot definatly skips a beat.

I had a lathe some time ago, as well as several other machines. It was great fun, especially after you get comfortable with turning. Always flip the piece & turn a foot on the vase before you finish.

I used to laminate contrasting pieces to create rims on my vases etc. Then got into laquer & color techniques on some pieces.

I know what your saying about the knots. There is a burly manzanita wood that grows local here in los angeles, a deep red with black swirls, and that stuff is rock hard.

Have you checked out fine woodworing magazine? They have great ideas.

    Nick,

I may have something for you.

Long ago I bought a Radial Arm Saw. I always said, if I could have only one machine in my whole shop...it would be the radial arm saw. This thing cross-cuts, rips, dado's, sands, routers, etc, etc. It has two shafts coming off the side so you can do all sorts of things with it. Very versatile!!!

Bottom line, my days of woodworking are pretty much over, the saw just sits in my shop collecting dust. I always imagined having it forever and/or handing it down to my kids...but alas: I have 3 girls and we're done with procreating.

If you are interested, I'll let ya have it for next to nothing...just promise you'll give it a good home and always use it carefully!!!!

    Lemme know

    - Steve

On the side I do funriture and displays for retail stores... (mostly golf shops). So I've got a fairly complete workshop, but I have never done much "woodturning"
