I know that T-rex pupil constricting effect was really awesome, but never would have thought enough to buy a house in cash! I'll have to check out Gods and Monsters sometime now that I found out you had a part in making it.
Avatar on its way to be the highest grossing movie of all time. Next week it will surpass Titanic as the highest grossing movie worldwide. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm
As predicted it got nominated for a bunch of Oscars, including best picture. The funny part is however whether Cameron or his ex-wife will win the prize.
Newscorp has announced there will officially be a sequel (as if there was a doubt). They also mention that the sequel will likely take between 4-5 years. So don't hold your breath. They also announced the movie will be released in June for DVD (blu ray) but not in 3d .. that will be released when the format is more available apparently. Thats a little unexpected. I was hoping that somehow the 3d release of it would be simultaneous with a TV that is built to handle it.
I heard on the radio today that it passed Titanic on highest gross, but it sure is a long way back n tickets sold vs Gone With the Wind.
I bet if Avatar was pretty much the only movie playing in most towns for 5 years straight without any television, DVD or videogame market to compete against it would have done the same. You can't really compare the ticket sale numbers of all these films prior to around 87-90 when home movies and DVDs took off. I even remember Raiders of the Lost Ark playing for 1-1/2 years in the local first-run theater. That doesn't/can't happen these days. Avatar will end up around 750 million domestic gross. An astounding feat for a bunch of 10 foot tall blue cats!
Funny how this thread started with folks thinking Avatar would be a lame movie due to the trailers. I must admit, I was one of those folks. I have seen it on IMAX 4 times now and am going for #5 this weekend. That seems like a lot for me and the most I have seen a movie in the theater in decades. When I was a kid, I saw Star Wars over 30 times in the theater when it first came out over a 1 yr period. Today, every time I go see Avatar, I worry that it is already going to DVD. Times are different. At any rate, it is quite simply one of the best movies I have ever seen and marks a new standard in sci-fi special effects, a standard not reset since Star Wars, 2001 A Space Oddesy before that, and Forbidden Planet before that. That movie is visual crack and the animation so good I would love to see that blue chick on the cover of Maxim.
Saw it in Imax 3-D. At one point I completely lost interest. Movie is simply too damned long. Too many visual effects and not enough story for me.
Just got back from the 4th time with the wife and 4 of my kids and a few friends that hadn't seen it yet. Theater was still full! Big thumbs up all around.
My thoughts too, as far as the plot and story telling. The 3D CGI was fantastic at Imax, but that's really all there is to this movie.
So after two months of being number 1 at the box office . Avatar was finally overthrown by Dear John? WTF is Dear John? Anyways I wondering if we will see 700 million for Avatar. Total gross as of right is 630 million and still going strong. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/
It will get to $700m but thats about where it will die because Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans and I think one other will start to eat up 3D screens soon. Avatar is down to $23m per week....thats low enough where just about anything coming out this week would have beat it. Good timing for Dear John
That's really all I wanted out of this movie. Sometimes I just want to go to the movies and completely suspend disbelief and go "Oooo, preeettty" *said in best Homer Simpson voice* I think some of you guys expect too much from popcorn flicks. And others cant past their political leanings and cant put aside the overbearing peachiness in the film. Im as conservative as the next guy, but that didnt stop me from having a great time watching this flick. My only gripe was that the Navi needed bigger racks and fewer clothes.
Just saw the movie in 3D. I like it. Yes, a bit predictable, but very enjoyable. It is a 2 bucket popcorn movie!
