Baby Bugatti revealed by Autocar

Bugatti has plans for a second model to sit below its forthcoming £800,000 Veyron hypercar... and you can ready about it exclusively in this week's Autocar. The £120,000 Ferrari 612-rival should appear by 2008, Richard Bremner reveals. It will be a practical car useable every day, in the mould of Porsche's 911, and could look like the car our artist's impression points to.

Specifically, its layout will be that of a mid-engined two-plus-two, reviving a breed of supercar that hasn't been around since the Ferrari Mondial finished production in 1994. Running on a unique platform, but with access to VW's extensive parts bin, it could ultimately end up with a twin-clutch DSG gearbox, a drivetrain borrowed from Lamborghini, and 500bhp - either from Audi's 4.2-litre V8 in turbocharged guise, or VW's W12 unit best known for its employment in Bentley's Continental GT.

It's going to take a $200K Bugatti to replace the Mondial.....

I wonder if Bugatti owners like the fact they're making a 200k car, that a lot of people won't be able to distinguish from their 1000k car...

 

I wonder if Mondial 8 prices just did a step change.

 

Same can be said of the Enzo/F430 among the masses.

Veyron is a flagship. This will be the bread and butter money maker.

 

Sounds like a parts bin special. The "real" Bugatti is long dead. This one is as original as Invicta.

 

Most "real" companies are dead too. Ferrari and Fiat. Lamborghini and Audi. Lotus and Proton. The list goes on. Ford and GM have been dead for a while!

 

Rolls Royce and BMW. Bentley and VAG. Aston Martin and Ford.
Maserati and Fiat.

i agree that a baby will dilute the brand's exclusivity.
what is it based on anyways? must be some sort of chasis sharing with lamborghini (miura??) or something.

on the other hand, MB/Mclaren really blew it by not having a Baby Mclaren.

 

Perhaps they can revive Delhayne and Facel Vega ? I am sure they can borrow another platform and lower division engine. Just drop some more emblems on the sheetmetal and you can fool more people. Grab some cheesy chrome valve covers, and you can whore another brand.


All of this to increase corporate profits.

 

But isnt Bugatti taking a loss on the sale of the Veyron? On top gear Clarkson said it costs Bugatti something like 5,000,000.00 to build the Veyron. So if the above is true, they need to make some money and fast.

 

Yeah they're taking a loss but maybe they can make some money back? It is a shame the company isn't "real" anymore but still a great car and for the most part worthy of the name.
