Oh! I didn't know that! So it is kinda famous, huh? Sorry about the repost! It just awed me so much... and I can't believe I never heard about this story!

There's also another story about a 330 america being used as a coffin for an oil tycoon's dead wife? OMG!! Was that one ever "resurrected"? Or is it gone for good?

The car in the color photo is a Euro car, the one in the excavation is a US spec.

Now, true, it could have been converted during the resto.

AFAIK, the car went off the radar in 1994.

Didn't you only determined it was a US Spec by the exterior lighting not bumper posts nor other criteria? The reason I ask is that many Euro cars required that US conversion to be imported

 

I translated the story months ago for our Dino Club magazine..
And today i found the Mystery Of The Buried Ferrari Dino Solved! by Jalopnik on drive.

I came to this story in Jalopnik "buried dino" a few years late, but reading it I wonder


-Were the people in the house or the registered owner charged with insurance fraud?

-Did the valet steal it?

-Did a mechanic really restore it and get the vanity plate DUG UP?

 

I saw it at a show just over a year ago. The plates on it now are DUG UP. Here is what it looks like now.

Sorry that is another photo of a very similar Dino at the same show. I have photos of it somewhere.

 

There was an extensive article on this Dino in the May issue of Classic And Sports Car magazine. The owner since 1978 is a Brad Howard from LA. The car has been beautifully restored in the original metallic green and, best of all, the license plate is DUG UP.

 

Like to hear what Brad Howard bought it for?
If he is the mechanic, does he still have his own shop?
I don't see where it could rust as fast as the newspaper reported. I have not seen the 21 minute video , does it have an interview of Mr. Howard?
Is that emerald green color pretty rare? I think it's a metallic green. I call it "bottle fly green."
At any rate I think Dino 246GTS have tripled in value in the last ten years so maybe his labors have been rewarded. I remember when they were thought of as a V-12 Ferrari's "little brother."

 

Dinos above ground rust pretty fast....any shade of green is pretty rare on Ferraris

 

What did Brad Howard pay the insurance company for it back in 1978? My guess, out of the blue, is no more than $50,000 and maybe closer to $25,000 seeing as to how it needed a lot of bodywork. Fortunately Dinos went through the roof since then and I think a 246GTS today can command $250,000.So it was a brave buy, not for the feint of heart
