Can anyone recommend a company that can do Cadmium plating in California? Monterey would be best, Salinas next, San Jose area is okay as well. Any place in CA is fine :)

Try Omni Metal Finishing inc. 11665 Coley River Circle, Fountain Valley, CA 714-979-9414. They are not in central Calif. but I have used them and the quality and service are great. BTW you should be prepared for the prices. This is not black oxide.

I don't know of places in your area, but don't bother with the suggestions of doing it yourself.
Find a good place, and have them do it properly. If there's nothing local, you can send it out to be done. Just make sure to call and specify what you need.
BTW, what material/parts are you wanting to plate, and are you specifically looking for gold color?

Interesting thanks. I have done parkerizing myself in the past. Perhaps I'll just do a black park finish on it. I think I still have enough to do it.

Why not have the parts powdercoated in a satin black? Itsa very durable finish and you have options as to color, finish (wrinkle even!) and anything from flat to gloss.
BTW, I have used Omni in Founatin Valley with excellant results, but they are not inexpensive. You may as well do 500 pieces as the one's shown as the price will be very similar.

Okay. That's an interesting thread...will come back to it when my battery gives.

Cadmium is going above and beyond the call of duty for this application, you probably know that already. Powder coating would be more than adequate. I would like to see you do it though. I have a friend tha owns a plating company ouside of Cleveland and he talks shop with me once in awhile. Steel takes Cadmium platting very well, as does aluminum, and remains remarkably neutral under the most stressful conditions. In many instances metals don't always marry (screw togther, etc) very well. Plating with Cadmium provides a neutral surface for metal binding...why the military loves it so much.

I'll hang back and see what surprises you have in store...

Well, having just gone through this myself, some tips:

    1) Plating yourself is doable, but about 10x harder than you think it is, and will take multiple attempts to get it "right." You will be playing with a wide variety of acids, and caustic chemicals...all with pics of a skull and crossbones on them, and plenty of warning stickers. Thoughts of accidently getting splashed with HCL acid will go through your mind. Quite frankly, its easier to paint a car and get good results than it is to plate a part.

    2) Finding a company to plate just a couple of car parts is more difficult than you think. Most of the places I called ONLY do commercial applications. If anyone finds a reputable shop that I can mail parts to, thats reasonable, let me know. I worry about mailing hard to find ferrari parts across the country...who know what can happen...

    Good luck!
