I was wondering if I can get some advice from you guys. I'm at a point where Im torn as to what direction to take in a career. As for the serious side I was a stockbroker for about 2 years, and that route had more bad than good (comissions only go so far before managed $ turns into genta pharm, and im wasnt going to lose my license churning), and touched slightly on the concept of mortgages. As of right now, I'm set up to be a financial planner, but all in all im having my doubts. I dont know if this is going to be something that I will enjoy. I'm not worried about being able to do it, I'm not a bad salesman if i may say so myself, but I just dont know if these types of careers are where I want to be. Honestly, I'm a huge car guy (likewise of mostly everyone here i would hope too) and have always been. I thought about maybe getting into racing, but I dont even know how to get started down that route. That is something that i really believe I would be satisfied with. Then again maybe not. I just thought i'd ask the people on the board, maybe you can give me some insight as to some ideas, or point me in the right direction. Thanks a lot

And in case you're wondering, while im not trying to post my resume here, I'm 20(stockbroker right out of high school), series 7,63 licensed (potentially life licensed as well), and I do work my ass of and am good at what I do. If anyone can maybe give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I wish I some great pearls of wisdom to share but I don't. All I can say is that I settled for a job I was good at and have regretted that decision for 20+ years. Do what you enjoy. Don't take a job for the money, because all you will ever have is a job.

If you love cars and that is what brings joy to your life, do it. Don't settle for what you can do easily if it doesn't make you happy.

If you do what I did, every morning when the alarm goes off, you will scream the "F" word, drag your butt out of bed, and dread every minute of your coming day. It is a fate I would not wish an anyone.

Find what you love and do it. Don't listen to someone else's opinion of what you should do. They don't have to look in your eyes in the mirror every morning.

    good luck

The best way to make a small fortune racing is to start with a large one.

What part of racing are you interested in? Driving, mechanic, engineer, aerodynamics? Or are you interested in event organizing, safety, marketing, etc. There are almost limitless avenues to be involved with racing.

I would be more interested in the driving aspect, maybe mechanic, but other than personal experience, I havent been involved in any type of organized racing, so I dont know if that will hinder me.

I would recommend contacting the Skip Barber School or the Jim Russel Schools. IIRC Jim Russel has a formula mechanics school along with the driving school.

Be aware, these schools are not cheap. Auto racing is very expensive. My take is that if you have some talent, the schools will help identify it. If you don't, it is cheaper to find out early rather than spend thousands campaigning in the SCCA, with your own car, only to be a permanent back marker.

You might want to post this question in the "Racing" forum. F-Chat has some hardcore racers that could provide a much better explanation of the options available.
