Coolant Changet

For a coolant change I see a drain plug on each radiator (item #2) but no vent. I would have thought that being as though the hoses go below the level of the radiator then there is no way to vent the radiators without one. I do see a hose connection on the radiator (just above the supply inlet) but there are no hoses shown going back to the water pump to allow air to escape.

Alan, my understanding is that the hoses above the top inlet pipe go to the radiator tank. These small lines at the tank are the high point in the system and will vent the coolant. See below in diagram on each side heading to the coolant tank (#6).

I drained mine and then used compressed air through the expansion tank to TRY and get all the coolant...didn't get it all...I think I got 2.5 gallons or so out of the 4 gallon system. Used an airlift to replace. Get that tool and change it often...

 

Open radiator cap. Remove both radiator plugs, remove both block drain plugs, disconnect hoses at both main lower coolant pipes. That is only after removing all underpanels.

Then repeat the montra.......this is no different than fixing a Toyota.

I thought it must be but the diagram I got from Ricambi doesn't show those small hoses but I was only looking at the ones for the cooling system and the radiators but they are on the Norice diagram. Ferrari do use strange terminology as I wouldn't have thought about looking there.

Does Ferrari's require special coolant or just the regular neon green coolant is fine? I need to top up mine but wasn't sure.

i use bmw blue....check the specs ferrari recommends.

 

Michael- Zerex G-05 will work fine and is available everywhere. It has nitrites that are good for Ferrari wet cylinder liners to prevent cylinder wall erosion.

I believe the G-05 is pre-mixed with distilled water -- is that your understanding?

Alan- I think it is pure anti-freeze and you need to add distilled or processed water.

Turns out both types are available and one comes pre-mixed with demineralized water.

I asked that because my indie uses G-05 and he told me it was pre-mixed. I like that as demineralized water is much better than tap water. I have a salt water fish tank and was considering taking some RO/DI water for him to mix then realized that RO/DI water is very aggressive with copper which is why all my plumbing is PVC. That would have been a costly mistake.

Hey Alan, DI/RO water has basically the same specs as distilled....any of them are going to have the TDS raised by the coolant and will be fine to use in your mix. Just stay away from hard water....

That is surprising as all of my RO pipping is PVC. All manufacturers of RO water say not to use metal piping. See below.

A. Most brands of RO system will reduce at least 85-90% of salts in water, so you can assume the water salts concentration would be about 1/9th of the content in the feed water. The aggressiveness of this purified water towards the materials into which it comes in contact is a function of its purity. The better the purity, the more its aggressiveness. Piping after an RO unit should therefore always be non-metallic. RO units will pass all the CO2 that is in the feed water. This means the water will be more corrosive. Don't use copper piping after any (brand of) RO system.
