Hey all, did Ferrari use cosmoline in the late 80's on the engine compartment? My 88.5 has a nice layer of either cosmoline or 21 years of filth and grease. Brake cleaner seems to be the only thing to really cut the grease. It is heaviest on the wiring as well as the underside of the engine bonnet. Any advise would be great. In the meantime I will continue cleaning. Thanks.

If it's the brown/bronze heavy wax-type material, believe they used Dinitrol Underbody Sealant (#4942)

    Dear Ferraristi,

This will be your first task....joung Jedi.

It will take you years to get all....I mean all of that stuff off. Brake cleaner is great for body surfaces but not near plastics and rubber ( wiring and bushings) For those sensitive areas use 3M Wax and Tar Remover. It's expensive at $10 for a small can but will do the job with no left over haze.

The best way to attack the problem is to use small squirts while agitating with an old tooth brush....don't brush your teeth with it again or you might not wake up next morning. :D

I've been at it for about 9 years and still haven't finished. Just take your time and do it bit by bit.

    Shamile,

I only used the brake cleaner on the tough stuff but have since switched to simple green. Its a long time consuming job so I have been doing it here and there while the Airbox, overflow tank, air inlet and heatshield are at the powder coaters. I will post pics when it is put back together. Also I ordered a roll of the insulation that Carguy used on the engine cover. It took a couple hour of removing the old heat soaked foam from the factory. I have taken pictures of the whole job and will post. Also I will make some pre-cut replacements from the left over insulation for who ever wants to do the job as well. Thanks for your tips. I will look for the 3M product.

    Mike

    P.S.

Do you know how to post pics on this forum???
