Door Ding

Hello,

I posted this on the Technical Q&A section and received some good responses, I am hoping for some magical solution any ideas are welcomed.

Unfortunately I am the recipient of a pretty good door ding (photos attached). The car is a 1988 328 Color; ROSSO CORSA Fer 300/9

I have read the Langka and Dr Color Chip threads and was wondering if they will work at this location on the body, and if there are any other thoughts or ideas out there.

Also is the paint single stage and what is a good source for the paint

The only answer I am able to provide is that yes, the original paint is indeed single stage.

How should magic help you here? Pray and it will disappear? You possibly need some correctional work done with a hammer to flatten out any tops. Then plastic filler and paint prep followed by a complete one or two stage paint job on the damaged area. Any good car painter car fix this and knows were to source the paint.

Touchup paints will do little more than make it red again. You can try fixing it by lightly wet sanding the edges of the chipped area and then applying several coats of the correct single stage paint to build up the level, then color sand and polish. That assumes that it is only a paint chip and there in no metal damage. But even then the repair may be visible upon inspection. Otherwise, professional spot repair. Either way, use Glasurit single stage paint with the correct hardener. As a touchup paint, do not add the reducer.

 

Get the colour scanned as it will have changed over time. You may find a spot specialist (they do hail damage) who can scan it and give you the recipe (or do the touch up for you.) good luck!

 

I just finished sorting out several dents on a Porsche 928 that I'm restoring where a previous owner had gone the touch up paint route. Do yourself a big favor in the long run and get it done right the first time. Even if you just leave it as is you're better off than a bad touch up job.

Most people will tell you that there is only one way to fix this damage and that is the 'right' way which is to re-paint a section of the door. While they are correct that this is the only perfect way to get a repair it is possible to achieve 80% of the result for 5% of the money.

As some have stated you can build the area up over time with touch up paint until the paint is good and hard and proud of the surface. You can then carefully sand the paint down to level and polish it. Once done the repair will be very good but not 100% perfect. Consider the costs because a proper door spray will be north of $1K for a perfect job while the touch up method can be done for under $50. Assuming you are paying for the repair yourself it is something to consider.

One thing to note is that because this chip is on the outside of a corner the paint will be extra thin there. Be incredibly careful when polishing or give it to a pro because you can go through the paint in a heartbeat and there is no going back once you have.

 

Chips, dings, dropping a bicycle on it, running your Ferrari into the garage wall...It hurts, but until ready for a full respray, just get out the little paintbrush and fill it in...you'll know it...your close friends will know it...but nobody else really gives a ****...

 

Thanks for all the info, the question I have is, will the Dr. Color Chip and Langka 2nd part activator effect the surrounding existing paint ?

JFerrarri, it will only effect surronding paint cosmetically if you get it on it...have to have a light touch

 

When the others describe sanding the touch up paint area, we are talking about really fine sandpaper of perhaps 1500 or 2000 grit. I usually use soapy water and wet sand the repaired area and then buff with polishing compound. Be careful not to sand through the paint especially on that sharp edge.

Anyway, I sure am sorry that this happened to your Ferrari, hope it can be easily fixed.

 

Langka does a really good job of smoothing out a touch up application.
