Driving Routes

I go driving a lot on La Honda Road. The best times to go (if you can) is while everyone else is at work, so around 10 am on a weekday. this driving is kind of slow up to skyline, but past that, most of the traffic dissapears. the drive up to la honda itself is pretty good, but after that (all the way to highway 1) is fantastic. when you near the end of the drive, there is a very very small town (just a few small buildings, actually). if you make a right, there is a nice, but short, twisty little bit that dumps out onto highway 1. after that, make a left to have a nice relaxing drive down the coastline.

I've driven Summit Road (branches off 17 near the summit, comes out in Soquel) a few times, which is great fun during the weekday, but there are residences along that road which makes it more difficult to feel safe going fast. La Honda is fun during the weekday, but on weekends you can't get any decent speed going.

I actually found Kings Mountain Road to be really fun, save for the very tight turns and sheer side on half of it . If you are not familiar with it, it branches out of Woodside at the base of the hill, off Woodside Road after Roberts Market. During the weekday you will likely see no one on it, which might not be good if you fly off the road, so be careful .

 

You can't go wrong on any of the roads in Western Marin. Stay off Hwy 1 if you don't like to follow RV's, though. As is the case with most of these types of roads, you must watch for bikers...both motorized and the slower kind. The bicyclists sometimes think that they are going pretty fast downhill and take to the center of the lane. Pay attention and make sure those Brembos are up to the challenge.

 

i do woodside up to skyline to pescadero to stage rd. (old stage coach road that a lot of bikers use. very narrow + a lot of offset turns) to hwy 1 where i'll just chill at the beach or get a burrito at davenport.

La honda is pretty big. Have you discovered the mental asylum?

 

There have got to be more roads than this in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, I don't know of too many myself either but I'll throw out one. There is a road off the 680 up near Sunol. You get off the exit going toward Livermore except you don't actually go toward Livermore or Sunol. I know you head East but you don't take the road that goes right to Livermore. I accidently discovered this road when I was taking a journalist from Sports Car Magazine for a drive in my car before he wrote it up. I'm not even sure the road has a name actually and it had some really really tight corners. Besides the sides of the road being a bit of a hazard (barely enough room for 2 cars), there was the threat of bicyclists who thought that no one else was on the road. I've seen that a number of places including a road right near where I live. The roads have no shoulders and these guys must think they are invincible. I mean, even if you are just going slow, its damn dangerous to go around a bend and find a bicyclist right there.

That's probably the best driving rush there is---for the buck (wheel to wheel, 2.5-3g's, rapid accel, instant stopping power, etc.)

i am taking a class with lisa caceres (hopefully in a month or so, and maybe even the ESPNRussell courses) and am hoping to start racing TaG 125.

A couple of my friends run ICC/ICC Pro.
