Has anyone tried these newer style exhaust gaskets (Ferrari part# 154984)? I'm finally ready to put the engine back in the car but before doing so I decided to smoke test the intake/exhaust to ensure no leaks. Intakes looked great but the exhaust unions where these gaskets live (exhaust manifold-cat, exhaust manifold-Y pipe) are leaking terribly. The exhaust hardware is on nice and tight but not over torqued (bolts are tightened down to the internal spacer).

The gaskets aren't solid, rather, they are a compressed metal mesh. Even though the mesh is very tight it is still porous and I can't see how these things will ever completely seal in exhaust gases. Of course the exhaust is cold, I wonder if they seal up after heat cycling?

Yep, those are the Goth heat shields that many are familiar with. In those photos you can see how close the inner CV joint/boot comes to the exhaust. I installed those after changing out the passenger side CV boot which had completely disintegrated.

I put them on my mondial t coupe with new Tubi and I smell a lot of exhaust if I roll the windows down. Didn’t notice it when I had the original muffler on.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to swap these 'new' metal mesh versions out.
