So, earlier today I was sitting by my desk doing some homework when suddenly I heard this distant roaring from the window. The car, a bright red F355, accelerated past my house just as I got up to the window. And what a noise (good noise)! Where I live there aren't too many Ferraris around, but I've been lucky enough to get to experience live accelerations of Ferraris ranging from 328 to 430's to 458's etc. And they do all sound great in their own way (especially the 458), but the 355...It's seriously the best sounding V8 Ferrari I've heard this far. When watching videos of the 355 they obviously don't capture the full sound, not even close to it, so I was positively surprised when I heard it for real today.

What's your opinion on the F355 engine sound? Is it better or worse or even similar compared to other previous or subsequent V8 Fcars?

As far as the V-8's go, the 355 is about the best sounding version made. A 348 with an aftermarket exhaust comes pretty close.

Okay, thanks for your input. :) What would you say about aftermarket 348 compared to an aftermarket 355? Or should the 355 preferably be kept stock in terms of sound quality according to you?

I know it's never as good on tape is it is in real life, but has anyone got a good sound clip that is as much reminiscent of the real sound as possible?

an all stock exhaust on a 355 still sounds good.
but very muted compared to what it can be.

at minimum need an aftermarket exhaust.

and if you really want to open it up requires the cats to be removed with test pipes.

I agree with you that in person is best, but did what I could to capture with some proper equipment. :)

355... Ask anyone to make a top ten list of the best sounding cars ever made, and you can bet it will be in there somewhere. Usually near the top. It is just iconic, and defines the brand for many, especially for that period of time.

Wow - I'm just a Capristo Stage III away from the full monty, apparently. (Mine's got a ~12 year old Tubi setup, so no slouch. But it does seem a bit muted by comparison.)

Here's a 348 with aftermarket exhaust for comparison (I have no affiliation with the owner/car/video): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRj7p6I5xNM[/ame]

I routinely have guys from our local chapter (348s, 355s, 360s, 430s, 458s) come over and ask about my setup (Cappy I with straight pipes... and Gruppe M intake, if that matters).

They all say basically the same thing after a group drive: when the secondaries open up, my car is the best sounding Ferrari they have ever heard.

Very cool to get that from guys in Stradales or Speciales that cost 4-5 times what I paid for mine.

This is just on a lowly go-pro, but you can hear the sound change pitch and reflect off of the mountain walls when it goes over 7k rpm. The sound is kind of the icing on the cake of a great overall car.

Wow, that really made me miss my F355 spider. I have an F430 now, as a car it works better for me. As far as sound is concerned it doesn't even come close.

What exactly is it that makes the 355 sound so special?.... can anyone put their finger on it? It appears to be the one thing everyone in the F community and wider agrees on, that this is the best sounding Ferrari ever made.
I love the top end scream, but even at idle (especially m2.7), it sound fantastic!

One thing for sure: An extra valve per cylinder allows for higher redline and unusual harmonics.

It's got test pipes on primary, which I think actually doesn't do much for the sound at high rpms (but increases it at idle and low rpms). I think the hot ticket is keep cats on primary and straight pipes on bypass.

It's hard to put in words, but based on that video i found the sound of the 348 to be slightly thinner and lower-pitched than that of the 355. Still a great sounding car nonetheless.
