I just took my car in to have the film replaced and re-tinted and the installer told me that the rear window has to be removed to be able to tint the rear window. Curious if to know if others had to do that?

It doesn't have to be removed... I had the same problem finding a capable installer finally found a guy that has been tinting for 20+ yrs. He did a fantastic job! Wasn't cheap cost about $425.

I actually read a horror story on a window tinting forum of an installer who removed the window of a 355 to tint it and it ended up cracking when they reinstalled it.
Just keep searching until you find a very skilled and experienced installer. Don't go with the new at the fly by night shop.

BTW this is no longer my car... I sure miss her.

Isn't it illegal to tint the front and/or rear windows?

I haven't heard of a state that won't let you tint the back window. Its not even federal law that a car has a back window. most states only let you tint down a couple inches on the windshield if at all. My cars windshield was tinted when I got it and I drove 3000 miles this summer and never got caught but I need to remove it this winter since it is illegal in my state.

Thanks Extreme, your ex-car looks great :)

Anyone know of any good shops in So Cal that can do it without removing the glass?

I also had my side and rear glass tinted without removing the rear glass. The rear window was tinted in 3 pieces. You can't tell though, he did an excellent job.

The window tinter also said it was a hard job and he charged me $450 for it back in 2005.

That was nearly double the price he would charge to tint a family sedan. ;)
