gambling question

I was out on the Palm Beach Princess gambling boat last nite and was playing craps. I noticed the dice have a round dot on the 2 that makes it look like a 3 from across the table. Are these weights to give the house more advantage? I haven't played a lot of craps so I am also interested if this is done to dice in Vegas and other places. What has been done to the dice and how do they get away with it?

 

Dice are calibrated, calibrated, calibrated. Each die is scrutinized. The singular most anal-retentive thing a Pit Boss, Security, and cameras get to do before dice see a table is ensure those are dice are what they're supposed to be. Fair and balanced. Records are kept not only of dice progress from Point A to Point B before it's ever out of the box, with witnesses, forms, signatures up the yin-yang, etc., and kept under video surveillance the entire time, even just sitting in boxes, but are kept for a minimum of 5 years for Gaming Control Board, etc.. Then, once dice have served their time - they're out, with more forms, signatures, witnesses, security, video surveillance, Audit department tracking it all, etc....

Nobody's playing games with weights and measures. No way, no how. That would shut the joint down.

You know that's what I thought originally. However, this boat is not in U.S. waters or necessarily governed by what the gaming commission in the State of Fl would require. That's why I thought something was up.
Do dice have a weight in them all the time? This case was always on the 2 and it always looked like a 3.

 

Maybe the dice are marked to identify the dice on the boat only?

 

The 'spot' might be the casino's logo or name printed on the dice. And compensated for while making the die 'true'. Otherwise the '2' side would be slightly heavier in weight, and the '5' would be exposed more frequently. Resulting in more 'hard ten's.

trivia, did you know that the numbers on opposite sides of the dice total 7?

 

No , I didn't know that but I do know the 7 roll is the most likely to come up.

 

Could it be the port hole where the resin is poured into the mold to form the die? After the pour, each die must be weighed and balanced resulting in this spot being the most likely to be ground.

 

I've never seen a craps table except on TV. Are the dice clear plastic so you can tell they are not weighted??

 

Yes they are clear but that circle I am talking about seems to be 1/32 of an inch or something. It is just not surface applied.

If you pick up one die, on the cube there are six sides, with the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6. Now, the number '1' is on the opposite side of the '6', '2' opposite of '5', and '3' opposite of '4'.

If the number spotting is different, RUN from that game, it's rigged.

Now if the '2' face has slightly more weight because of said marking, it will over time favor the '2' face being down, and the '5' appearing on top, hence the 'hard ten' favoritism.

Next time you're there, examine the dice when you become the 'shooter' and/or ask the dealers/boxman what the spot represents. They should have no reason not to answer that question, if they do RUN!

But most casino's know that the odds are in their favor, and a straight game will generate over a long time a positive cash flow (for them!!), while a crooked game will get them closed/blacklisted.

 

Next time I go I'll ask what that mark on the 2 is. I agree with you, they should have no trouble to answer the question.
