The covers are off. The passenger has side quite alot of metal dust in there.

    Here is what I found.

The Passanger side look OK, from what I can see..The needle bearings has some play with the covers off, normal?

On the drivers side I found this broken lock ring on the axel that drives the speedometer sensor.
The bearing on this axel has minor play, really not much. Normal? See video

The other bearing has ALOT of play and can be pushed around. The bearing balls looks ok thou..See video

Okay, I just had a look at your video and you got lucky. To my eye it looks as though you dogged the bullet with oil pump bearing. The bearing, that you show in your video having play, is the one that blew up in my gearbox and destroyed my pinion shaft. The ball bearing retainer you where wiggling is what came apart in mine and sent chunks of metal through my gears. Since yours is still together you may only had had play in the main shaft because of the loose bearing. Have a look inside the oil pump cover you pulled off. Look to see if you have wear marks on the inside of it. The metal dust you found could have been from the shaft rubbing on the back side of that cover, which houses the oil pump? The cover is only aluminum.

The little clip that is broken is a sort of seal. I do not know exactly what it is made of, but when I replaced mine it had a sort of plastic feel to it. Ricambi sells all the stuff you need.

So for right now I say you have a bad oil pump bearing that was just about ready to let go.

Also you will want to remove the cover on the back of the gear box, where the clutch is, and have a look at the ring nut in there. It is the little cover with 2 nuts, the one right below the throw out bearing. Then have a look and the gears inside the box on each of the shafts. They should be pressed together nice and tight.

I took the oil pump apart. The gears look finem but there is shavings on both the plate cover and the covers it self, that might be why my filter is full of these fragments/metal dust...?

So, (being that nothing else is wrong in there!) I can get by with a new Bearing and ring nut. And a "seal ring" for the lay side shaft. ....?..I am starting to feel lucky here...

What is the part number for the bearing....There must be a "non" ferrari number for such a part?

Yeah, I think you can get away with just new bearings and ring nuts. But be sure to check everything else out also. Like I said I think you have the shavings because of one of the shafts pressing on the oil pump cover, because of the loose bearing/s. Actually after having looked at your pictures of the oil pump cover, those markings look like normal wear from the pump gears. Have a look on the other side of that cover to see if it has wear marks.

Before you take the ring nuts and bearings off, check the stacking of the gears inside the gearbox. Everything should be pressed together nice and tight, then check to see what shaft has the lateral play in it. However dont just stop with that out side cover. You also need to remove the the intermediate housing to exposed the gears behind it. You can see the other nuts you need to remove. The oil pump housing is just the outside part, you also need to see behind the bearing you were showing to have play in it. So you will need to get that intermediate cover off and have a look behind it.

Check the ring nut in the back of the gearbox too, the one located on the clutch side of the transmission.

Have a read through these threads. Page #6 of the second thread listed below has the bearing numbers you are asking for.

I will look for lateral play in main and lay side shafts.
I will remove the intermidiate covers
I will take a look at the pump cover again
I will try and find the ring nut you mention at the back on the transmission too

I makes sense to check out as much as possible while a have the trans out. But right now I feel like only changing the parts that are actually broken or have bad wear. Otherwise where does it all end....

The SKF number mentioned did not give any results on the SKF site?? Anybody know where, and at what price?

Did someone post a guide on how to make a simple ring nut tool?

I will update with more pics as I move furter in to this transmission

Some guys will take an impact wrench socket, and the using a grinder, cutting one out. I have also seen 4x4 spanner nut sockets at the auto parts store that look as though they could work? Though I never looked to see for sure. Fatbillybob had the ring nut sockets when I rebuilt my box at his house, and some of his were homemade.

Better yet Lars, just get those ring nuts off and then take the bearings with you to a local bearing supplier to have them matched up. When I bough my bearings, I bought them from Ricambi. Daniel can get you what you need. Though I have sourced other bearings by just taking my old ones with me to a bearing supply shop. Either way works.

Can the intermidiate cover be removed with the ring nuts still on there?

Here are pictures from the Inside of the gearbox. Are these gears tight as they should be? (I know I should get better pics..)

The shaft with the speedo drive has NO play and the shaft to the oil pump has some light lateral play.
Tha big shaft running from the cluth and into the gearbox, does however seems to have a bit of lateral play, and A "clunk" sound when you turn it, as is grips into contact in the spline.

The locknut in the clutch area, seems good?. BTW the nuts for the cover were not tightned at all...

    BINGO!!!

In my opinion that is the source of your gear whine. There should be no play in the main shaft at at, just like you had no play in the lay shaft that has the speedometer phonic wheel on it. If my memory serves me correct I think you do need to get those ring nuts off in order to get that intermediate cover off. But before you remove the ring nuts, please check to see if the ring nut is loose at all. It looks as though it is on there good and tight, it is even staked.

Great...So the theory about only a new bearing and lock nut is still valid I guess....

All the ring nuts seem tight, and are all staked. All 5 I have seen so far.

    Lars,

Look at http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207294&page=2 I went through the same as you and for exactly the same reason, moving stick when accell and decel in 4/5th, whining box, metal fuzz on the plug etc. I had replaced the same bearings and have a spare set of SKF# BA2B636151A which replace the original SKF #BA2B633912. These have matching sizes and drop in perfectly like many others, however also have the exact same thrust angle, and you will find these are the only ones to do so.

PM me if you are interested, and make me a reasonable offer (or I will swap them for a broken MAF sensor if you have one (good electrics, broken filament).

You will need to adjust the mating surfaces with the bevel gear once you change the bearings and so will need the spacers right next to it.

Secondly, make sure the aluminium plug at the opposite end of the oil pump on the main shaft is well tightened. Yours looks a bit loose... I found mine in the passenger side bearing housing...

    Marco
