HRE Failures?

I have HRE custom wheels on my widebody RX7. Let me say they screwed up the 1st set w/ backspacing error & then the 2nd set. I did the math & diagramed everything. Although I kept them, they aren’t quite right. The center caps have cracked, clouded & are cheap crap. The rims have oxidized & pitted. I've got a Mariah connection for future wheels.

there have been posts about HRE's failing on Z06's as well at our forum. I will post a link if it permissible

 

Like most of the modern ''Pimp my ride'' wheels and ''manufacturers'' they are overpriced and c-rap

 

I have HREs on my Testarossa and they certainly do bend/ding easily.

Light, strong, never heard of anyone having a problem with them. They'll actually send you the parts to rebuild them at home, if you so desire.

FWIW those wheels pictured can be easily restored back to new with some paint and a little elbow grease.

 

Are the HRE wheels machined or stamped with DOT markings and rim size, or are they sold for "race use only"

 

a lot of guys with LPE's and blown 427 swear by these

Do tell. These are polished Al rims that can be saved but:
w/ a plastic center cap that is toast
& completely rusted bolts (20 of them ea) attaching the "wire" to the wheel.

i have bought 2 sets of wheels from john at ccwheel. i can say that they are very strong wheels. i have ran over pot holes and bumps and wheels didn't bend even little bit. great wheels at good price. i'm thinking about getting a set for my 360 to usei it at the track. they are picture of my red porsche on their web site.

 

Any wheel will fail. Especially if they are tracked. Inspection before and after is mandatory.
Race cars change their BBs wheels every so often ...

 

Using bikes as an example, a magnesium rim that is fine for a track, is dangerous for use on the road. I always thought that a road rim was more durable than a race rim and further that the race track was a "friendlier" environment for the wheel than the road.

In our experience, this statement does not hold up to reality.
If a wheel on a two wheeler hits a pothole big enough to bend it, it does not matter if it is aluminum or magnesium.
Bent wheels are usually the result of a crash, or bouncing off of a curb, it does not matter is it is street or track.
