Just wondering, as the $ is so weak against the £ at the moment if anyone has imported a car from the US and saved some cash.

Of course it'll be LHD but is there a substantial saving to be had? What if that partciular model only came in LHD such as the F40 or Porsche 959? I know that the US cars are enginered slightly differently (lights etc) but we have plenty of LHD Euro Ferrari's in the UK so all the bits can be changed.

    Anyone done the sums?

When you have the sums, phil, don't forget to add the VAT and Import Duty

don't think there is VAT if they are second hand, just import duty which I believe is 10%

I was thinking about this a few weeks back, but with an M3 Cab. DupontRegistry had 03's for almost the same amount in dollars as they would be in pounds.

It would certainly be interesting to see what other costs would be involded and what the spec difference was with US v UK cars.

The only one I konw was massively different (MB again, I'm afraid) was the old E36 M3. They had 321 bhp in the UK and something like 240 in the US.

Anyone know if this is similar with other manufacturers?

if importing from outside the EU, VAT is payable. Unless you have comprehensive proof the VAT was not reclaimed once it was exported from the EU (if applicable)

as our american cousins say, "ask me how i know"

    Hi all,

Any car arriving from any country not in the Euro zone has to pay import duty of 10% and 17.5% VAT. The cost is worked out by the valuation of the car, how much it cost to bring to the UK, 10% duty and then the vat is charged on the total amount.

I know because my car is arriving on Thursday after 4 weeks on a boat, I then have to pay Customs.

    Regards,
    Phil.

    Thanks Phil,

Makes sense really. Being nosey are you still managing a saving on the car you are bringing in to the UK? Was that your aim or was it just the right car you had to have?

    Hi Phil,

I was after a Lhd car to start with, when this one came up at silly money.
348 Spider, Italian spec and yes I have saved a fair bit of money, I just wish I was Vat registered as you can claim the Vat back. I also hate paying this bunch of Tossers in Downing Street any money!!

What are you looking for in the states??

    Regards,
    Phil.
