I am getting a laptop and I was hoping the resident F-Chat nerds can give a hand to a crusty old Luddite.

I am choosing between Alienware and Vio? Are these brands good? Any better ones?

Also which chip is better PowerPC dual core or AMD64bit? What is a good processor speed to have, I WILL be playing videogames on the PC
can I upgrade a graphics card on a laptop?

    Thanks.

vio? you mean sony vaio? if so, i'm no longer a fan. i own five sony vaio laptops (from the original 705) and my next laptop will almost certainly be a lenovo/ibm thinkpad. the quality is long-gone on the sony computers imo/ime.

    fwiw,

FWIW, all my Sony products have been outstading in quality, performance and reliability.
Everything else I previously was a total disaster, but my Vaio is bulletproof (2 years later), and I just upgraded my camera from a Sony W1 to a Sony R1 (when I went through 3 Canons within a year under warranty before that!). I'm a Sony whore, what can I say.

Make sure you have a separate video card, and plenty USB ports (3 is the bare minimum)

Alienware is way overpriced tbh. Most sony stuff isn’t all it should be, and overpriced, though there are some exceptions like the sony vaio VGN-SZ1VP. I’d be looking at something like the Rock Xtreme CTX Pro if you want to play games on it. Not sure about availability where you are though.

    Here’s a review:

It’s very doubtful you’ll be able to upgrade a laptop's graphics card, as by the time the graphics card needs upgrading the new card won’t be compatible with the rest of the laptop.

There are two main processors for your consideration, Intel Core Duo and AMD X2. Right now Intel’s offerings have better performance for your money, but the difference is mostly negligible and games rely more on the graphics card than cpu.

If you don’t want to play games then lenovo is your best buy without doubt.
