Leather Quilting

Was quilted leather backed by a carpet/padding material standard in the 250 series for the trunk? If so, is quilting a requirement of concours-level restorations? Will points be deducted if quilting isn't present? For those that don't know what quilting is, it's the triangular cross stitching which pretty much serves no purpose but design. I suppose the argument can be made it makes the quilted material more rigid, but the main purpose is design. I appreciate the responses.

 

Any quilting that appeared in the trunk lining was vinyl, NOT leather.

 

I know vinyl/naugahide existed in the 1960s, I just assumed the materials used from the factory were a thin-grade italian leather.

Are you saying the 250 series used vinyl in the trunk?

So I guess that's another question, if you use automotive leather with a carpet/padding backing to line the trunk instead of vinyl is it deemed non-original and would cause a points deduction?

As far as quilting, the same question applies since you can quilt leather and vinyl both.

 

I have never seen leather in an original Ferrari trunk from the 1950s-1960s. I have strong opinions about the quality of Ferrari Concours judging, so I will make no comments in that area.

 

The backing material for the "quilting" that is in the luggage area of the 60's Scaglietti cars is ordinary foam sheet.

I can't speak to Ferrari's reasoning but quilting serves many automotive purposes beyond design aesthetics.

The basic idea for quilting is to create consistent insulation: As with quilted blankets, the diamond pattern maintains uniform warmth by inhibiting shifting of material. The same need for uniform material is needed in heat insulation (firewalls and near exhaust heat), fire-proofing (racing suits), sound insulation (noisy cockpits) and damage protection (moving blankets and trunks).
