Markings question..

I've seen the band as shown on the rear of the fuselage in a few different pics now and was curious if anyone knew of it's origin/tradition/history of where and why it came about.

blue and gold are the colors of the Annapolis naval college

 

Those are traditional markings for an Air Sea Rescue airplane. B-17's had it during the war and everything else thereafter.

Yes, for air-sea rescue. Increases visibility.


Planes operating in arctic conditions often have red where that Albatross has yellow.
