You'll also notice the McLaren's minus the "West" badging; replaced with driver's first names. Jordan, IMO, is the only team that was clever with name replacements. i.e. Bitten Heroes, Be On Edge. "Juan, Kimi" and the Ferrari stripes, even blank, white screen are pretty lame. Of course, BAR tried to slap the FIA in the face with "Look Alike."

Which countires have the ban for those advertisements? It seemed to me that only a few years ago it was only Canada and the US.

 

When Jordan had snake logos on their cars, the signwriting said 'Bitten & Hisses'


Ferrari are pushing it a bit with the pattern they have used IMO, because it's not supposed to even be reminiscent of the ciggy logo (in the past the Marlboro chevron has been banned); I wouldn't be surprised to see a change on raceday.

The rules in the United States is somewhere along the lines of one Tobaco sponsorship per sport per year.

McLaren was allowed to display the West logo because no other racing car had been sponsored by West. Marlboro had already sponsored a race team in another racing series in the United States before the USGP.

 

In earlier days, it was banned in Germany as well, but only on a gentlemen's agreement. That agreement doesn't stand any longer. We did have tabacco on the Nurburgring, but only since that wasn't run as the German GP, but as the European or even Luxumburg GP, just to be able to run tabacco sponsorship.

From 2006, all Tabacco sponsoring is prohibited.

 

Anyone know what sponsors teams like Ferrari, McLaren and Renault are seeking?

I think you mean what teams are seeked by sponsors? It works the other way around for top teams such as Ferrari, McLaren and Renault. There is a long list of sponsors willing to pay good money to be on those cars and only a limited amount of space.

But on the other hand teams like Jordan, Minardi and even Sauber this year have struggled with sponsors. The lower end teams will happily take money from anyone willing to give it. minardi had a sponsor that made kitchen sinks for a while

2006 maybe 2007 should see a return of the Colas to F1 too

 

Points well taken. Any ideas what sponsors we may see for 2006? You mentioned some cola companies for '06 and '07.

 

We may see alcohol companies become major players again.

But I think the focus is more on global brands and global technology companies.

KFC would be just as bad as tobaccosponsorship as they would have to change the cars logo to PFK in France and Canada

I have read that Ferrari already has an agreement with Vodaphone to take over Malboro's real estate when tobacco advertising gets prohibited for good.

According to the latest figure I read (and this was year ago, at least), Ferrari's contract with Vodaphone was worth approx. $US 45.

Banning tobacco advertising is moronic. I've been watching Formula One practically since infancy, and I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. There's no advertisiment imaginable that could ever incite someone into such an already publicly demonised habit.

 

Marlboro still wants to sponsor Ferrari once the ban is in place by keeping the Chevron and possibly the bar code patterns on the car such what they already have at races where they cannot have the full logo in place.

Just a little side light the Altria Group owns Marlboro and Kraft Foods and Vodafone is the parent company of Verizon why dont they just change the logos for the US market. This way they can get even more bang for the buck.

 

You are quite correct about Vodafone's intent. It will be intresting to see which direction Ferrari take. Maybe they will keep the Marlboro bar code or maybe a Vodafone logo?

Regarding the tobacco sponsorship, let me ask you... You have been watching F1 since infancy... were your parents pretty well off? Did you have a silver spoon upbringing? Ever had any money troubles? I am not trying to be a jerk but I am trying to make a small point. I do not know you, but chances are you were raised well. You never smoked a cigarette in your life... that shows you are a respectable, educated person and have class. The point is that tobacco advertising targets young adults and some mature adults with social pressures.

Smoke Marlboro and you will be successful like Michael Schumacher and drive a Ferrari! The message hits straight to the minds of young adults with social and financial pressures. It is important that regulations be put in place to protect young adults who may have a tendency to spend the little money they have on tobacco addiction rather than invest it in their future.

The young adult gets addicted to cigarette, becomes a chain smoker, develops lung cancer and then becomes a burden on society. Quite frankly, a problem for you and me. A solution (I am not saying that is the only one) is to limit their exposure to enticing advertising that attracts them to smoking.

The best solution in my opinion is to educate young adults and give them knowledge to take informed decisions. Easier said than done. Hard to do when inner city schools are over crowded and underfunded.

 

Coca Cola is rumored to be an upcoming Ferrari sponsor. At least the color is right (well, not for F1 red-orange, but for regular Ferrari red)!

 

I would not exactly say that this is a 100% true statement. My parents are by no means wealthy. Everything i have done in life my motocross and jet ski racing were all done on my own. I dropped out of high school, and my parents and sister smoked. I never have had the desire to ever smoke.

In this case it is Ferrari or team that is being sponsored who is protecting their identity and image. It is important for a brand such as Ferrari to maintain a consistent image. By having the logos changed on the car a part of the image is diluted.

The other issue is that the deals were signed in Europe by the Marlboro division of Altria and not Altria itself. Similarly with Vodafone. So they cannot just ask to put different logos on the car depending on the location of the race. The sponsors don't own the space on the cars to put whatever they feel like puttin. These are detailed contracts with specifications. The sponsors pay for just that particular logo on the car.

There was case no so long ago... with Williams and the HP sponsorship. The sponsorship used to be Compaq. Compaq was taken over by HP. HP wanted the logos changed from Compaq to HP ASAP. Williams wanted to protect their brand identity. A contract was a contract and HP had to follow the lead of Williams.

I am sorry. I should have added that I am making a generalization. But there are still good chances you had a decent social support structure... great friends who never smoked, youth groups, church, a good role model or something to keep you busy... or atleast a way / motivation to overcome any financial difficulty.

Lets be honest. Tobacco companies are not going to just roll over and collapse the minute they leave F1. They will do just fine. Casual smokers who still want to smoke will be able to get their choices in the market. All the sponsorship ban does is stop vunerable parts of society from becoming worse off.

Pretty much i did it the hard way with a strong work ethic and never taking NO for an answer.

In fact if you talk to a lot of people that knew me in high school would pretty much call me a "Loner" If you look at the typical "Loner" they are always in trouble. Perhaps i am a fluke by nature.

You raise an interesting question, and I appreciate your comments.

Both my parents were heavy smokers, and most of my friends during high school smoked like chimneys. Thus, whatever temptations I had to smoke came from watching the people around me do it, not from Formula One or tobacco advertising.

Nowadays we have a tendency to give people little credit. There is a 'we need to help them, because they can't help themselves' mentality. This only breeds the victim attitude in people, and it does more harm than good. If you know that smoking is wrong, then you already have all the strenght you need not to do it. A Malboro banner will not break it.

Having said that, if I have to make a choice between two equal products, and one of them is a Ferrari sponsor and the other isn't, I'll always go for the sponsor. This is how I figure tobacco advertising works in Formula One--by luring current smokers to the more publicised brands.

 

I would love to see a scarlet Ferrari again not this day-glo Marlboro red crap it's been for the last few years. I think they should let them run thier old tradtional numbers again too, i never liked the way it's set up now with the numbers going by the points.
