This sounds crazy to me but maybe with Ron Dennis gone the two teams might actually "share" an engine next year. IMO, this would be worse than Ferrari building an SUV. :)

McLaren linked with shock Ferrari switch | PlanetF1 : PlanetF1

McLaren’s potential divorce with engine supplier Honda has led to speculation about a possible partnership with Ferrari.

Honda are in a precarious situation with McLaren after countless reliability and performance issues and the Woking-based team are seemingly weighing up all available options ahead of the 2018 season.

A return to Mercedes is the most likely outcome, but respected journalist Pino Allievi of Gazetta dello Sport believes McLaren have also approached Ferrari about supplying engines to them.

Allievi also reckons that such a partnership would help resolve Fernando Alonso’s much-speculated future, but it is very difficult to believe that a relationship between two of the biggest giants in Formula 1 would suit either party

Yep. I have seen the original italian article yesterday, and frankly I can't bring my mind to accept this. And then what? A Ferrari with a Mercedes engine? O tempora, o mores...

Those engines that Sauber was getting are going be available, but I doubt they will be any more competitive.
Time is running out for McLaren to make a power unit decision for 2018.

Mercedes has been cooling off the speculation that Mac will have their PU next year.

You know I can see that -- rebranding the engine to Alfa. Interesting idea....

Or this is my idea. Ferrari brands Mclaren and Haas and Sauber as Alfa....4 proxy votes

for the politics BS....BOOM! After all, that has to be more important than the constructors?

Then you do what Mercedes has been doing all this time?

If Ferrari set up a second "technical staff" to control "Alfa engines" separate from Ferrari, I could see this working.

    Interesting...

What a freaking disaster (in relative terms) it would be for McLaren. Of all the engine suppliers they can expect the least parity from Ferrari. Beggars can't be choosers..

For macca at the moment, just reliability is a win! Sixth in the championship would be massive!

If McLaren continues at this rate, trailing in the teams ranking, losing sponsors and being overtaken by minnows, the team will go under before the next formula in 2021.

Agreed. Shows how vulnerable even great independent teams like McLaren and RB are.

Maybe this can be an opportunity for the vw group; a half-step into formula 1.

Honda has been a epic fail...some folks there might need to perform harakiri at this point...

Yep. Marko has already fired a warning salvo to the FIA; if there isn't a competitive engine available to a reasonable price in the next formula, Red Bull will pull out.
So, it's up to the FIA to write sensible rules for the next formula.

    How exactly?

I seriously doubt that VW have anything at all on the drawing board right now, let alone a power unit ready for the 2018 season, and there's no way on this planet that Ferrari; Mercedes or Renault are going to be strapping a VW badge onto one of their power-units!

This could actualy be a good play by sweaters...he wants to put Alfa on the map again, so, if a big team with alfa engines were to be competitive it would be a majot publicity stunt...what's to loose, Mclaren could eventualy become an adversary for Ferrari, but that's also true if they use Mercedes engines, so at leat, if they win, Alfa could get credit for it...

VW group Audi is the main rival of Mercedes no way will Mercedes be using an Engine that is from their arch rivals. Mercedes will probably have a fearsome rivalry with the VW Marque if they do decide to come. More than Ferrari in fact since both are German and have history of completing in the dtm so naturally it could be way more fearsome.

It promotes ferrari also since Alfa Romeo uses engines engineered by ferrari so it's a win-win for both except most of it is a win for Ferrari.

VW have already pulled the plug on their $200m+ Audi Lmp1 team in favour of the MUCH cheaper Formula e (less than $5m budgets). Porsche are apparently well into negotiations to do the exact same and save VW another $150m-$200m a year.

The last thing they will be thinking is entering F1 with these spending wars and engines. It is all just wishful thinking,PR and a complete lack of understanding of just how deep in the doo doo they are financially after 'dieselgate' long term.

They probably get more media attention for flirting with joining F1 than they've had in the last decade in WEC. If they have to send some stony face executive to an F1 meeting one in a while to maintain that, then they will.

How similar are the energy recovery systems in LMP1, do they have MGU-H?

I think the guys of the road car marketing department would commit mass suicide if this happened. "Hey, we´re using F1 inspired technology... oh, ummm, yes, borrowed from the guys who are our main competitor in the market".

Make it simple: eat crow and get a Mercedes.
