motor oil

anybody using the quaker synthetic? I'm not happy with it, it foams when run hard, and smells.
Mobil 1 never had this problem.

 

What weight were you using and on which car? What smell and from where?

 

I've read that Shell Helix oil (which is OEM) foams. Quaker State Euro and Penzoil Euro are re-packaged Shell Helix, so they should also foam.

 

Some foaming is not necessary bad. The foam lubricates the hard to reach areas. Although too much can cause flow problems as well. Shell intended for their oil to foam a bit.

 

I read many times on this forum that Shell Ultra Helix is foaming. I always used this oil and never had the smallest foam. I'm wondering why?

 

When I was using Shell, it was foaming a bit when checking my dip stick. I usually check my oil after a 20-30 min drive and when the engine is idling.

 

Likewise. I'm using Shell Helix and this is exactly what I see when I check my oil level in the manner described above.

 

I like Mobil 1 0W-40. Has a better viscosity index than Shell Ultra Helix.

This is what I use as well. All my cars run this same oil and weight.

Better oil than most oils out there. I want to give RedLine a try one of these days.

 

The dealer used Quaker State Q horsepower at my last service. My annual is approaching in two months. I will go with my independent mechanic's recommendation.

 

My last change was to Motul. It seems to foam less than Pennzoil Euro I had in there before. Anyone else use Motul? My mechanic said it was - in his opinion - the best available. He likes Royal Purple second best.

 

I switched to Royal Purple and can't complain. It's easier to get (local Partsource stores carry it) and I can just grab it when I feel like doing an oil change.

Both Motul and Shell required an order, wait time, etc.

 

The Shell Ultra Helix foamed badly in my 575M and we switched to Valvoline full synthetic 5W-40, which does not foam at all. Like someone said earlier, Quaker State Q is rebadged Shell Ultra Helix.

Ferrari now also recommends Pennzoil Ultra for European Cars in 5W-40 and you have probably seen the commercials with the Ferrari California. To show the Ferrari connection, you actually get a Ferrari hat with your purchase if you are quick enough.

For those that are using Motul, which one are you using?

 

That's the first I ever heard that some foaming is beneficial and in fact intended by Shell. Can you link or post the source of that information?

 

N4S- Me, either. Bubbles in a lubricating fluid passing through pumps, passages and filters are never a good deal. They inhibit flow and thin the fluid and form a sticky film in places you do not want a film.

Would like to see the source as well. If it were beneficial, refiners would be bragging about it.

I use Motul in all my motorcycles, good stuff too!

 

I use Quaker State syn because that was all advance auto had in 5w-40!
Seems fine to me. Pressures good, hasn't overheated, Cam belt hasn't ripped off and she sounds just as good as ever at 8500rpm.

Tried Amsoil for the past year in the f-car and just yesterday, filled with Redline. I have used both of these oils in my other cars for years, and they are both quality oils.

 

Very interesting, and this certainly appears to provide solid support for the foaming properties that I (and others) have witnessed with Shell Helix.
