    Guys,

I have a friend who is considering buying an '87 GTS. The seller has disclosed that there is an oil leak from the rear main seal. How big of a service is this? What does it pay as far as book hours? Should he pass on this one, or would it be worth still getting a PPI done and possibly move forward on the car? Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Josh Ferguson

Leaking rear main seal could equate into a clutch job...depending on how long it's been leaking. Not sure about the cost but make sure it hasn't spit all over the clutch.

Is a rear main seal a 5 hour job, a 40 hour job? Any help would be great. Thank you.

Not sure about shop hours, however, if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it your self in a weekend. You can do the whole clutch, bearings, rear main seal, etc. for $400-500 in parts. If this was the only issue, I would continue with a PPI. As long as the seller is willing to discount the price (for owner to do work or shop), this is not a big issue.

I had a rear main seal leak on my '87 that did turn into a clutch job - it was completely fouled with oil. I am not very good with a wrench, so I had it done at my local independant shop. The costs were:

    Clutch disc $455.90
    Pressure plate $331.50
    T/O bearing $132.00
    various seals / o-rings $75.00

    Labor $1,125.00

    Total $2,119.40

I would say it is still worth looking at. If that is the only issue the PPI turns up, your friend should be good to go.
