Newsletter software

Okay, I drew the black bean. (See Mier Expedition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). I have to produce the department newsletter. But instead of endless hen meetings, I have decided to just do the damn thing myself. So, any tips or ideas? They will be much appreciated.

Lazy ass slacker. Come on, I need to get this damn thing done. It is six-months overdue. If none of you know how to create a newsletter. How would I do the same thing on the web? By doing the same thing, I'm talking point and click, none of this HTML bs.

I built my own html based newsletter... still revising out a few tweaks since I'm not an html expert.

You want point and click, you can do image map based items with graphic files. You could pay for a service that does that same basic thing, like Constant Contact.

Right now, my newsletter's weight is 46kb, with all the graphic and image files on our server.

No matter what route you go, having the images on a 99.9% up server is pretty important.

besides that, you could just make a pure text based newsletter, and not worry about anything being pretty

 

Ms publisher, save as PDF.

 

Use a service like Constant Contact or Socket Labs.

If you just send from yourself and BCC everyone... you'll start getting hit by spam filters.

This newsletter is an annual slick that goes to about 4,000 alumni and donors. In the past, it has cost up to $16k just to produce one edition and the detail work was jobbed out to a PR firm. Definitely, a no-tech item. Hand held so you can read in the can.

I want to start the process of putting this online so I was thinking about trying to produce a PDF file that could serve two masters: 1. for the printer, 2. for a web page.

I remember, with horror, many years ago trying to do something in Pagemaker or something like that. Do you remember the scene in Office Space where they pounded the crap out of a copier? Substitute my PC for that copier.

I have all the pics. I have all the editorial content. I know generally how each page should be laid out. Do I really need to pay the money to send this to a printer? I'd rather use the savings to add to our scholarship funds. (We just gave out over $100k in scholarships for roughly 400 accounting majors.)

I have done newsletters for departments and companies before. I can tell you that Word works really well in a pinch - you can format with multiple columns, add graphics, and EASILY convert to PDF.

It's not the most sophisticated, but you can produce a very professional slick using it. If you have it on your work PC, start using it minimally to map out the look.

I'm a Product and Marketing guy by trade - corporate, not agency...but have worked with agencies - I've used publishing tools, but I keep falling back to Word for quick and easy.
