Does anyone know the oldest ferrari that was bought new that is still in the original owners hands? Or did they all sell out during the boom days of the 80's.

I've posted this one before, but it is 0556(0446)MD in its first race when it was ten days old at the 24hr GP of Paris on the big bank at Monthlery. F. Picard and P. Maret drivers. My dad bought it in 1960. Also, see my avatar

I believe Bob Lee purchased the following car in 1957. I think he was in his teens when he purchased the car at the New York auto show and his Mom drove him home in it. Maybe there are better pictures of the car out in Ferrarichat cyberspace.

Hi Manny, I was under the impression that the car in your Motion Products photo was 0485SA, the Boano-bodied 410 Superamerica Cabriolet, as shown at the Quail Lodge event in August(see photo below). If I'm not mistaken, this car was first shown at the Turin Auto Show in 1956 and remained in Italy (original owner: "A. Rispoli") until Bob bought the car and brought it to the US in the mid-1980s.

However, it has often been confused with it's visual twin, 250 GT s/n 0461GT, which I understand was the 1956 Geneva and New York auto show car. Did Bob tell you that story in Monterey? If so, it's quite possible that I'm the one who's confused here. Anybody know more?

I can't remember the exact details but, I believe that there is a yellow convertable of some sort in California and the lady who owns it bought it new.
It is either a 340 or 375 from the early 50's and, as the story goes, when Mr Ferrari learned that the car was not to be raced, he ordered it painted yellow with a green interior.
Thuth or fiction? I've seen pictures of the car and it's stunning but who knows about the details?
    Bob

Bob, that's right. 375 MM 0460AM. Originally delivered to Mrs Willie Day and still with her son (Robert A. Day Jr) today. Having been completed in September of 1954 and delivered soon afterward, this car is probably the oldest Ferrari to still be with the original owners.

Wayne - you are an amazing source of information.
Now I remember - the famous "Day" car.
As far as I know, it's completely original.
Can you imagine the value - not monetary, but as a piece of Ferrari history?

    Hi Wayne,

The dashboard inside #0461GT has a little indication to the Geneva presentation. This pic was taken at the Quail last month, so it definitively was the 250 GT Boano.

Thanks! So that explains it. Do you know if 0485SA is with Bob as well, or is that just the result of more confusion?

Robert Jr did have the car restored in the early 1970s before showing it at Pebble Beach, but I understand that this was merely to freshen it up cosmetically. It might have also undergone further restoration since (rumor had it that it was going to make an appearance at Pebble Beach last month) but, having never been raced or wrecked. I can imagine that all is original except for the paint, possibly the upholstery and the tonneau that covers the passenger seat. The original was lost to a fire (it wasn't with the car at the time) many moons ago and a new one constructed. Definitely a page right out of history.

The 410 Superamerica Boano's Cabriolet and Coupe and the 250 GT Boano Cabriolet are all in the hands of the same person as far as I know.

Hi Wayne. You are mistaken. Bob Lee purchase 0485SA at the New York auto show in 1957(I dont think he said 56). I beleave Bob said he had previously meet Enzo in europe as a young man and told him he would like to buy a Ferrari some day. When Bob saw the car at the New York show he wired Enzo
explaining that he had X dollars in his bank account and would like to buy the car. Chinetti contacted Bob and said "I dont know who you are but Enzo said I am to sell you the car". He picked up the car with his Mom and she drove him home.
    He still owns the car.

Hi Manny, thanks. Judging by Boudewijn's photo, it would seem that this car is actually 0461GT, no? That would make sense with Bob's story as the car was shown at the NY auto show (will have to check on 1956 vs 1957). I believe 0461GT (which looks identical to 0485SA) was at both the Geneva and NY shows in 1956 and appeared in this exact shade of blue. 0485SA, I think, was the Turin show car and appeared there in white.

More clarification from anyone is welcome. Kare?

460 is one of my personal favorites. Can you imagine that as your daily driver? More importantly, can you imagine a pretty woman driving it during the '50s and '60s?

    Regards,
