While Pirelli have expressed interest, the following just appeared at Autosport:

That's interesting! Didn't Michelin always state they'd only come back if there was some competition?!

I, personally, would like to see the return of one-race tires--that is you can only pit and change a tire that is kaput.
I, personally, think one-weekend tires are laughable in F1

Indeed. [Can't remember where "we" read that, but it does ring bells.]

The other thing I noted was (presumably) Michelin will "cost the teams 3x" Avon's fees - I thought they got the tires FOC from B/stone right now - If they've got to start paying for 'em (as it seems?) maybe Michelin is more interested in being a sole supplier (?)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Huh?

You want tires to last 6 races? Or you want 'em to be able to use 6 during the race?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Maybe six different brands? Or six compounds? I'm guessing here too...

I have feeling Michlein will be the one, even though they are more expensive. Its the best option as the teams don't have much time to design their new cars with a new tire. Michlein has the experience and can give the teams a tire pretty quickly to design their cars around for next year. Also Jean Todt is French and so is Michlein, I am sure he will do everything he can to make sure they are their next year.

I'm not sure.. they've been demanding competition and they're going to charge 3x more than Cooper Avon. Seems unlikely. Since it's a spec tire they'd all have to deal with any set back having a noob manufacturer brings.

Pirelli and Michelin want 18 inch wheels, Avon wants to stick with the current 13 inch ones. The teams will prefer the latter option, because otherwise they'd have to redesign their whole suspensions.

    Cost cutting?

Of course it's cost cutting, they can just pull the suspensions of their current road models that fit 18 inch wheels.

That's what I heard. I think it'll go to Avon for that reason.

That was proven a flop look back at Indy 2005 when Michelin boycotted racing and it turned into a 6 car parade

I'm with Rob here, Mitch. One-race tires wasn't good for F1.

    I like...
    • Pit stop strategy
    • Tire changes
    • Refueling - it adds to the strategy
    • Engine failures - rev those babies to 20,000+

I think there's too much in the way of tinkering with the rules of F1. There needs to be consistency in the regulations and just let the teams get on with it on the track.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

    Should be a good one....

Would like to see a bunch of manufacturers in the series...can only help reduce the borefest...now passing is done in the pit entrance....

The Cliffes notes: Apparently, the teams/FIA are expecting to reach a decision on tire supplier(s) for next year ahead of Monaco. Michelin, Avon & Pireli have all submitted formal proposals.

Michelin is believed to only be interested if there's a tire war. The other two want exclusivity. ["Keep costs down old chap!".....]

Looks likely that switching from 13" to 18" wheels won't happen before 2011 earliest.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out,

    Cheers,
    Ian
