That's not something that you buff out in the morning.

 

Doesn't take much bank to drag one in the flare, especially on the -8. Word is they got the wind shear warning below 50', hit the TOGA's and touched the runway. Note the rudder deflection.

Yeah, 6 degrees of bank is about all it takes to hit a pod. Wish we could see the ailerons. That leaked video of my landing in Narita....some think I'm overcontrolling. Not the case. You need to stop the roll, even if only a few degrees. And stopping the roll usually starts a roll in the other direction. So you sorta have to keep checking and stopping the roll. You do in naturally, but it looks strange without feeling what's going on. You have to be on centerline before getting too low, as you can't bank to fix anything at that point. There's no fly-by-wire tech keeping the wings level either. It's stick and rudder. I'm not sure how low the windshear warning system is active. Maybe until touchdown. Our company policy is to go around with a windshear warning. While I love technology, I really don't like a computer dictating a go around.

Lou, can you "just" let the thing autoland if desired?

I (vaguely now!) recall the BA guys going in to LHR would always announce a "fully automated landing" - albeit after the event back then...... Was apparently a CAA directive. I was doing it so much I could very definitely tell if "you" or the A/P was landing the thing. "You guys" would let it "drift" a little, whereas the 'puters wanted to keep it on the straight & narrow no matter what.

"Feel it" - whether its a car or a plane, seems to me that one's arse is still a pretty good arbiter of whats happening!
