Thinking of buying one of these- a red 89 in las vegas at the moment. Its in great shape but I want to work on it some and make it even better. Two things I can't find that I'd like to are: seats with the porsche crest and seatbelts that say porsche on them. I've seen these in photos but can't find them anywhere (checked pelican and others)

    Best if its a 944S2,
but the turbo is still faster,
I would like to have a 944S2, they have a 3.0 liter 4 cyl. 208hp, turbo body, suspension, and brakes.

Yeah the S2 are great but I can't find one for less than 10k which is my limit. Found turbos in my price range but they're older and high mileage. where could I get these seats? What about leather and how about cheaper?

17 is a pretty bad age to be getting into a 944. Your insurance is going to be through the roof and to maintain it properly (unless do the work yourself) will be thousands. I have an 86 944, it's a great car, but owning it at 17 would be a financial melt down, and just not an intelligent decision for a number of reasons. My .02

He's right, I have an 86 also and you have to get on the internet and find a good buyers guide for these cars, then make sure the previous owner has adressed all the issue's, then a you must be a mechanical person and learn to work on them yourself, you'll be o.k. then.
Go to clarks-garage.com and start reading. Good luck.

My wife had a 944 turbo back in the day and they are very expensive for parts and labor. Not much performance with the non-turbo. A friend this past summer bought a beautiful 944 and even through it was in beautiful condition with under 30,000 miles it cost him $3,000 in repairs so be careful and keep at least $5,000 in reserve.

You might want to consider visiting the Rennlist to get more accurate answers on current ownership costs of a 944. As with anything PPI is the all important factor when considering the purchase of any such car that is 17-18 years old.

Even if you pay 3000 a year in maintenance costs on your used Porsche you come out ahead in regards to new car payments on even a new Camry to say nothing of something like a new 996 or 7.

So many suggest that the cost of repairs is insane..

On a car worth under ten grand the cost of repairs sounds like you'd be upside down very quickly.

Nice car though....but just doesn't sound like the right move?

Hard to say.....but if you could do the labor the cost of parts seems to be the sticking point.

Maybe people could enlighten us on examples of what items cost so much so we could get a better understanding..

I know of a few guys who tracked them and got rid of them because the parts were sooo dam expensive it didn't make sense...

I've always liked the 944 turbo but couldn't make the jump because the suggestions on parts costs..

Stay away from 944/928 unless you have the money to maintain them. I have had a 1988.5 944 turbo S since it was 2 years old and I can tell you I have spent several times the cars original MSRP on repairs in the last 15 years. There is one A/C line alone that costs almost $1500 to repair! Keep in mind at this age the ball joints in the control arms are bad (they go bad no matter what) thats easily $450 a side. Count on replacing your torque tube at more than $2700!

My car is near mint with the exception of small cracks near the defroster vents on the dash, after almost 5 years of trying to get a new dash from porsche (hard to get b/c its an airbag dash in burgandy) I finally got one, installed for $3700!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The big problem now is that Porsche has stoped making a lot of the parts for these cars so in some cases you have to go with used.

    I was 18 when I bought my 944 turbo. Insurance (full coverage, 500$ deduct.) was ` $1,600 a year.

Oh, and I've owned several 1990's Audi's that cost way more to maintane than my 951 did.

Please explain this one to me. I understand that OEM parts from the dealer are often overpriced, but unless that hose is made of kevlar and gold foil, I could probably have one made to exact specs for less than $200.

I've though of buying a 1998 silver audi 2.8 quattro for 10k its either that or the 944's. Well if I went on insurance independently it woujld be 1600-2000 a year on the lowend. I think it could be worth it.

I agree! WTF! Kevlar and gold foil! Thanks for the laughs and the insight.

I would say with posts like this there is good reason to drive something else...

    Holly crap...
