How many of you would do the engine compression and leak test during PPI?

 

Depends on mileage . I believe it's a standard part of PPI

 

I have and would absolutely would recommend those tests (when warranted).
Of course, it all depends on the make, year, and mileage of the Ferrari.
For instance, I'm contemplating adding another V12 to my collection.
Was quoted $900+ for the PPI.
Leakdown & Compression test was another $400+.
So you're looking at $1,300 - $1,500 for a complete pre-purchase inspection.
For non-exotic buyers that's ludicrous.
But to us collectors and enthusiasts it is absolutely paramount that we do do our due diligence.
It's like prosecuting to the fullest extent -- if you are planning on reselling a few years down the road.
Then, the relentless checks you do now can add value to your sale -- especially the more vintage ones.

 

When I bought my 2008 F430, I had a dealer do the PPI/CPO (certified pre-owned). I asked about doing the leakdown/compression test and Ferrari states that it is NOT required for the CPO if the engine has not been rebuilt. If I was not going to do the CPO, I would have done the leakdown/compression test. My .02

 

DonJuan the standard PPI doesn't include engine compression or leak test. The car has around 17k on the engine.

 

If $400 buys you peace of mind, do it. I would!

 

I would never buy a Ferrari without a compression / leak down test. Just had one done on a 360 with 21K miles. Cost without: $400. Cost with: $600.

 

On a 360, yes. Because it has pre-cats. These tests can help ferret out any past damage to the engine due to cat material coming loose and riding a reversion wave back into the combustion chamber.
