    Gentlemen...
I have found myself at the point in life where I am ready to pop the question to the girlfriend. Not having been down this road before I keep racking my head for ideas on how to pop the question with some pizazz and keep coming up short. All my close friends and family have made lame attempts at at this moment in life so I am short on inspiration and advice. The ring is being created so I am still a few weeks away from the big moment and have time to make it the best I can.

I thought of dinner at the same table and same restaurant as the first date then a walk through her favorite park afterwards but that seems rather cliche.

Anyone have a clever idea that worked for you or heard of working well? I am ideally looking for something non-expensive (I am dropping the cash on the ring) and relatively private and not involving a lot of people (no proposing on the jumbotron).

    Thanks in advance guys!

After recently being at a sporting event and someone getting proposed to on the jumbotron a row away, my mom and girlfriend both quickly told me never to do that, the only women who will apprciate are the ones who love the sport and they still might find it lame. They also said the cliche restaurant thing is lame too, unless it is in like Pari or something. Of course that is their opinion, others may love a quiet restaurant witha ring hiden in thier ice cream.

Whaetevryou do just make it romantic and sometihng between you two. Maybe go with the recreate the first date type of thing, take a plane ride and have rocks spelling it out on a beach. I even heard of one guy who use Ask Jeeves (internet geek couple) to help with the question.

Whatever it is, she'll appreciate it. Good luck!

This is what I did. I bought tickets for Valentines day to Las Vegas. Told her it was just a trip. On the plane I told her that I couldn't even ask her until after her sisters wedding so I wouldnt steal her sisters thunder. So she was angry. When we got to vegas I took her out in front of the fountains of belligo, I had the ring tied to a string that was up my sweater, as I was looking around she said what is that string? I told her it must be my sweater and if she could pull it out. She did. The ring came out I looked at her and asked her to marry me. At that exact moment the fountains started.

She and her friends thought it was the most romantic thing ever. She had no idea.

Of course I had no idea what I was thinking either. My life sucks dont get married!

Lot's of variations on the theme....

The first time, I posed it a a rhetorical question..."Would you be happy married to me for the rest of our lives?......" it was driving down the road, in a normal conversation! Notice also a subtle shifting of personal responsibilty in that wording....:)

Later (after that divorce) I did it subtly, as a critique of her wardrobe for a party, as in "That's a b itchen dress you made, baby......wait a second, you are missing this one detail.." and slipped the Cartier box into her hand.

Neither were the 'down on one knee, public place" type scenario.

For one thing a perceptive girl will see that coming from three miles out......for another she might say "He11 NO!!!!!!!" and I hate for everyone to see me crying...!! LOL!

Actually the ones that say 'no' or maybe better 'yes, in a few years' are doing you a huge favor, I still remember one love of my life who said "No, if I marry you, you'll be a boring family man, not the wild and crazy guy you really ARE!' She was really smart!

Best wishes man, I'm sure you'll do fine! Come back and tell us here how it played out!

Good luck to you! I'm getting married in June. I popped the question about a year and a couple months ago. At the time, I couldn't really afford a ring...so she thought. I told her I was putting it off until I could afford a nice ring for her, because she deserved that much...it was all a lie. I bought the ring and actually had it in hand for about two months while I played with her....that's just what I do! I would catch her on the computer lookin at websites, designing rings. Little did she know the ring was hidden literally 15 feet from her. I had fun with it! I kept making comments how I was going to buy this or that. A new car here, and new toy there, blah blah blah. I just know it was making her mad as hell. At the time we had just moved here to Dallas. Over Thanksgiving weekend I planned a trip for us to go to San Antonio. We had not been there at that point. I'm not one for big public displays. The festival of lights was going on at the riverwalk. SO, I got a far away from that as possible. We did the dinner thing that night, and just walked around. As we were walking I told her I loved her, and she said the obvious...I love you too. I asked her "how much", and she just looked at me like I was a fool. I then pulled the ring from my pocket and SUPRISED THE **** OUT OF HERE! For the first time, she really had no clue I was up to something! It was the best smile I've ever seen! She forced me to get on my knee and ask her that way. It was fun! The only people who knew were her Mom and Dad, my Mom and sisters, and my Boss (I had to get out of work for one day). Great memory!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am leaning a bit toward re-creating the first date experience for sentimental reasons. I have a couple of weeks to plan so I still have time to figure it out.
