Restoration Question .....

This is somewhat off subject as it concerns my 81 928, but I know of no other forum with so many experienced restorers so I figured I would post my Q here. I have the dash and center out of the car and want to bring the ignition lock back to its original glory - which is a black finish. I tried spray painting it (with etching primer) and that did not seem like a durable finish as the key chips the edge of the ignition key slot when you insert it into mechanism. I don't want to remove the ignition assembly - so with that limitation in mind - does anyone have suggestions on how best to re-finish it? I attached a picture. Thx, Andrew

Without wanting to remove it, you are limted to painting it really... I am sure there is some really durable paint you could find out there... If you want to go through the trouble to remove it, you could have it powdercoated and that would really hold up well. Good luck.

 

i know this is not the rigth way but i sometimes use black muffler paint or even engine enamel which has turned out to be a quick fix, you can even try one of those not-so-thick roll on bed liner paints, it will dry to be a very hard finish and maybe it will work,

 

Try epoxy appliance touch-up paint. Stuff is very hard after a couple of days of cure. Sticks to bare metal pretty good. Just clean and rough up a little. Scotch Brite works well.

Try Sherwin Williams Polane. 2 part epoxy paint - amazing stuff.
