Rollover extraction-?

What consideration is made in the Countach - Diablo - Murcielago for passenger exit/extraction in the case of a rollover?

Cant get out Countach windows, is there a function to remove the door if you are on the roof in any of these cars?

You are just plain screwed pal!

No easy way to get out without turning the car back over.

 

Use your fire extinguisher through the windshield or other glass.

If you're slim enough then through the windshield is the only way out. But use your .45 on it first

 

Not many other choices there.

Better just keep the "shiny side" up.

 

I thought there was some kind of tool that came with the Diablo to release the door completely. I'm sure the info you need is on the net somewhere!

 

The glass in the doors could be taken out easily with a little bit of inertia and would create a decent opening. Maybe not a one size fits all. The metal cross piece in a countach is pretty flimsy.

The door is firmly attached via the hinges. I suspect the tool you are thinking of is the "emergency" window winder.

I inquired at British Motors when I bought my Murci. They were stumped and emailed SantAgata. The reply said, "open the windows". So, I guess you'd better keep the motor running if you flip, at least until you get the windows open . . .

The guys up at the Jim Russell Racing School suggested a window mounted tool -- aw, now I forget what they called it -- but it was a little spike, very sharp, with a gas charge that would pierce the windshield and shatter it. The kind of red button that you better hope the guys at the car wash don't push out of curiosity!

I like the .45 suggestion. And I agree: shiny side up, the only way to fly.

Does the gear knob on the Murcie, possibly Diablo not unscrew to reveal a glass shattering pin for such a predicament? In the Countach, you would be stuffed!

I've seen it recommended before to keep a small hammer in the glove box to break the glass.

 

A spring-loaded center punch would be better than a hammer.

 

A buddy of mine rolled his 03 Murci down a 30 foot embankment with a passenger. He was very lucky that this happened at low speed and the car rested on a mound of dirt on its top! He and the passenger both crawled out the drivers window, which was down and only able to because the drivers side rear was propted up on the mound of dirt.

The Driver was very sore the day later. The roof crutched all the way down past the head rest to the top of the seat and the windshield to the top of the steering wheel. Squished him! Luckily that is all though. Someone was watching out for em for sure

Thank you to 2NA for not posting the additional NWS pictures of the European Murcielago rollover crash / fireball.

 

Any info on passengers? That Murcie is from Czech republic, I have a friend over there who owns a Gallardo and he told me about numerous Lambo accidents over there. Somewhere I have a picture of burning Arancio atlas Murcie on highway towards city of Brno, I'll post it as soon as I find it.

 

Glad he's okay but the Gallardo, equipped with conventional swing-open doors doesn't have quite the "inverted escape" challenges that other Lamborghinis share.

I haven't seen the other Murcielago pictures you referenced however I have seen burnt toast before.

I am looking at some Murcielagos and have had that concern as well. Obviously the rollover risk is relatively low but if you do, there really isn't any way to get out. The compounding problem is that they do tend to catch fire when inverted. The hammer seems good but to be honest, even with all of the glass out and no roof collapse, I am not sure I could get out of the car (I am 6'5" and not exactly a contortionist). Does the manual say anything about what to do in case of a rollover?

 

Both were burned beyond recognition. The pictures of their charred bodies were circulated widely on the net and can unfortunately still be found. The passenger was a model.

 

You'd be surprised at what adrenaline will do during an emergency especially knowing what happened to those poor souls in the Czech Republic

On a lighter note you may wet your pants in the process which could help as well (fire suppression, reduced abdominal circumference/volume, etc).

But as a minimum I'd carry one of these. It has a built-in inertia hammer and a seat-belt cutter.

Better than nothing at all.

 

Just don't put it in a compartment that you may not be able to access. I have mine taped to the fire extinguisher, since it's likely I would be using them together and it's mounted where I can always get to it regardless of if the car is upside down.

 

No wonder - those chaps from the Czech Republic are driving for the 1st time such power-cars. Most of them are used to drive the average cars but not those weapons (...and believe they are good drivers like Schumacher!). The 1st thing you have to do driving such cars like Gallardo, Murcie etc. for the 1st time is ...you have to learn and -- be patient!
