I sailed just about every dinghy, raced lasers, laser2's, j29's, I-14's, and crewed on some big boat races on the great lakes. It truly is a wonderful sport. I dream of retiring to a yacht.

Got to go on a sailboat for the first time this summer, it was a merit 25 and absolutely loved it. I want to go a ton more next summer and am thinking about building a little boat to learn the art in. any suggestions on books or kits?

If you just want to learn the basics, I'd suggest picking up a used 420/FJ or something of that nature. Relatively cheap and you can learn how to handle a larger vessel once you understand how the wind and tiller affect the movements.

Warm sunny day, warm water, food, wine: Sailing RULES.
Cold day, cold water, sailing less fun.

It definitely is time consuming. I sail for my university 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. With class and sailing, doesn't leave time for much else.

Been in boating (sailing) all my life. 100 Ton offshore. I have owned a 30' Catalina for almost 20 years. Also own a 25' Raven Race boat. Cars-boats-cars? And they said owning a Ferrai is expensive.

Catalina 34 and Hunter 36. Great boats, fun to sail. Nothing beats going on the bay and sailing to Tiburon for lunch and a glass of wine.

    There is nothing better.
