my dad bought the 58 in pn58b540s3f

it hums a bit from a small angle, its nothing really. says it makes that noise from the high voltage lol

lots of plasma to charge up, i guess
im guessing the "smaller" ones wont be noticeable 8)


how it looks in terms of sharpness, i dontknow.....
he has no hd programming lol none what so ever

had it since late august
does look very @#$%@@# bright and rich colors
was use to a dim old school projection tv that was 60inches and 6 years past its prime

 

Pioneer and Panasonic rule the plasma market in terms of picture quality, features, and price.

I love Samsung having 2 of their LCD TVs and 2 of their LCD monitors here at home.

However, they are not class leading in plasma TVs yet and they are still behind Sony who has been a consistant leader in LED and LCD technology.

I would take a look at http://reviews.cnet.com/televisions/?tag=leftColumnArea.0 and narrow the list down to three possibles and then locate which are available to view in your area.

Don't buy sight unseen if you can help it. Samsung has a 65" LCD in the works and while I love that set, it will be so overpriced at first I can't justify it. It will make the Sony 65" KDL-65W5100 plummet by up to a grand and the Sony 60" Bravia NX800 will also take a hit which is when I'll pull the trigger and upgrade the 40".

 

I would second the comments on Pioneer and Panasonic being the better plasmas by far. However, now that the Pioneer elite line is gone, I would go with the Panasonic which is generally less expensive but very similiar quality.

$ for $ a plasma will have a sharper picture and much truer blacks than any LCD out there still. For significant movie watching duties, a plasma is the way to go. But, plasma's use a lot more power and heat up much more which makes the LCD better for many applications.

 

I just bought a PN58B860 and i am thrilled with it. I read al lot about the "humm" but i can tell you definitely that you can hear it with no volume but as soon as there is any speaker sound you can not hear it at all.
THe picture is with all playback but it is extraordinary with Blu-ray or streaming in HD or HDX from VuDu.
My wife and i spent quite a few hours looking at different sets and technologies [LCD, Laser, LCD/LED] and in our opinion the Samsung Plasma had the best picture.
We were replacing a Mitsubishi 62" DLP that had died so we wanted a screen size of at least 55" so the 58" plasma was perfect.

 

I just purchased a second Samsung Plasma about 3 weeks ago, 50" for my basement and I love it. It looks fantastic...I watch alot of sports hockey, football & etc and the picture quality is excellent especialy in HD and I have a 42" Samsung Plasma in my family room upstairs which is amost 2yrs old and still looks and works perfectly.

Samsung now also has their new (i believe) 52" & 60" Plasma "Slim" TV's. It has tons of built in features and can even double as a computer screen.

I did some research before I purchased, and got a pretty good deal too.
