Who has it? Pros-cons-lessons learned. I live in a rural area and want to change from dial up. Are providers about the same? Comments? Thanks
A few years ago we had DirecWay internet from Direct-TV. It was not very good. The bandwidth speed was only there once the data transmission link got started. So, for something large and one-way, performance was good. Things like a multi-mb download for a new software product or Windows Update was fast. However, most internet use involves clicking on a series of web pages (such as reading fchat posts). Each click required the satellite to be pinged. The lapse rate up & down to the satellite added a half to full second delay to every mouse click result. In other words, surfing a series of small web pages was not much faster than the old 56 kb dial up line. Make sure you go to a neighbor's house that has the product you're thinking of ordering before you buy. See it in action. I suspect you'll wait for another bandwidth option (Verizon FIOS or wifi radio). We went with Roadstar wifi radio connection when it became available in our area. It was great. We later went to Verizon FIOS which was another step better yet. Hope this info helps.
