Satellite Radio

I was wondering if any of you guys subscribe to any of the satellite radio services and if so which are the best for sports programming. The reason I ask is that I am looking into getting one of these systems for my Uncle for Christmas. He travels alot and often flys to his destination, then rents a car, which makes portability a BIG issue. I would like to get him a reciever that can be used in any car and also acts as a portable (a walkman so to speak). He is also a big sports fan (mostly college football/basketball, NFL and NBA) and their sports programming would be the biggest reason for getting him the service. Looking at both XM and Sirius it seems that Sirius offers the most as far as NFL and NCAA, whereas XM is more focused on the MLB and NASCAR. Just wondering if any of you guys had any insight into which would be the better system/service.

 

What a great gift, he will love it. I have XM on 3 vehicles. I only listen to music so I don't know which is better. It's great to not have to change stations when you travel.

 

I have Sirius - but only listen to music and NPR, so am not familiar with the sports programming available. But it is nice to not have to search through local stations when travelling.

 

I just got the XM to go Delphi for a gift from my brother. It is great and easily portable. There is a magnetic antenna for use in a car and it will broadcast the xm on a radio signal or output through a cassette adapter. I think they have a pretty good variety of sports programming, and if you already subscribe you can add this second one for around $6.95 per month instead of the standard $13 / month if you keep it on the same account. Go to XM's web site it should show all their programming and you can email them specific questions if your answer is not on the web site.

While I listen to it while at the gym, I'm a talk radio junkie while in the car , plus I see no need to pay for radio when FM is free.

 

Do you subscribe to a pay television service (Satellite or Cable)? Why do that, when VHF and UHF are free?

 

Exactly. Compare the crap that is on network TV to the original programing on HBO. Not ever close. I have had XM for about two years now and will never go back to terrestrial rradio. XM is way ahead of Sirius in terms of equipment. I plan on getting a MyFi portable sometime soon. XM is currently offering $50 off serval receivers.

 

To the original question, a salesperson (my Dad bought a portable receiver) summed it up best. XM is good if you are conservative, like baseball, and more mainstream music. Sirius is good if you are liberal, like football, and more obscure music. I have XM, and have rented cars with Sirius. For music, I much prefer XM (though I would be happy with either). I enjoy listening to Bill O'Rielly--he is on XM. I like football--bummer on the XM

 

Since I rarely listen to music in the car, its just not worth it to me...
