Just tried to buy my first Ferrari, this '77 308 GTB:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-360-308-GTB-Ferrari-308-GTB-1977_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ84156QQitemZ4604129181QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I was the high bidder until a German blew me out of the water with six minutes to go. After looking at the Ferrari Market Letter asking price index, I decided $33.5K was the highest I wanted to go for a carbed GTB - past that would be too speculative.

    Damn that strong Euro.

Oh well, it was fun to actually commit to pulling the trigger. Plus I had no chance to inspect the car in person first. I figured in a worst case scenario, I could flip it and lose the difference, if there was a difference. See, I've been taking all this "You could die tomorrow" preaching here on the Chat to heart.

Funny, I thought I'd narrowed my search to the 84-85 QV GTS or higher mileage 328s, and here a hardtop early 308 set my heart to pitter-pattering. Must've been that joyride Jim Angle took me on around Algar in his screamin' beast.

Well, they say the hunt is half the fun, so it continues.

That was a nice old car! I remember when Steve brought that car out to Southeast Region meets at Road Atlanta in the early 1990's. Keep looking, there are many gems out there!

    desmomini,
I'm glad that you enjoyed the ride. It looks like you've been infected with the sickness. That 308 on Ebay looks to be a really nice one. Good luck with your search!

What do you guys think of that yellow colour? Kind of greenish?

    Was it common?

I've seen only one 308 with that color in person, and a few on the internet. The one that I saw in person was supposedly Mario Andretti's car. It was up at Holt Motorsports about 5 years ago. I think they look pretty good in that color.

Hmm - that car at Cloverleaf seems like it'd be worth a look.

I'm back in the Philly area the next two weekends, maybe I'll take a swing by the shop. Thanks, Dave!

It's listed as Fly Yellow which is not greenish - I'd put that down to the photo reproduction.

You're right. It was Andretti's car. That seems to be the one car that Tim won't sell. He's still got it as far as I know.

you just have got to learn to snipe! 15 seconds left is plenty of time to place a winning bid. Been on both sides of this coin.

Those pics were off......Fly yellow is screaming New York taxi yellow, man!

Someone find a pic of my Art Car for him, unless they were all lost in the crash here, I think there's one of Valeria in her matching miniskirt here somewhere.

IMO, that PARTICULAR car was worth above market but you had to know Steve, Bo Pirkle and a bunch of other things to realize it..

The other thing about carbed 308s you need to know is '77 is the last year befroe catalytic convertors, cam profies fell way off from '78 on....that's why the old ones 'feel' so strong when you ride in them....risk of fires goes way up on the later cars too, when an ignition problem rears it's ugly head!

You are on the right track though........keep looking!

There ARE a few more good ones left out there...;)
