    My Japan office is suppose to change its 10 years old server now, and it'll cost about $60,000. It is not Window-based. This sounds outrageously high to me, but I don't know anything on a server.

    I see window based server which costs much less, but w/ adequate size. I think all they have to do is to transfer current data to a new server (which will take 1 day, right?)

    What factor determines which server is appropriate for your business?

    The software they run on it matters a lot. The hardware may not be that costly but the software could cost a lot to migrate/upgrade/buy. Esspecially if it is old proietary stuff.

    Ijust spent 40k on one box with a projected 5 year life span.

    Does the 60k include installation cost, or is just hw/sw? Without knowing the specifics of the box, server replacements are not fun and can be very time consuming. Espicially if there is alot of data and alot of users connect to it. You have to make it look seemless to the end user.

    It all depends on the software just like Oppie says. I just installed a DB Microsoft box with quad Xeon chips and 4 gb of ram that cost us 30k. A unix box could cost more depending on the hardware.

    Your box strictly depends on software. For instance a Linux based system could be inexpensive. A MS based system somewhat more and you need to look at licensing cost. Then you go to things like Solaris were you licensing is that much more.

    Software is Unix, it is used by less than 500 clients.

    60K includes installation & data transfer time, too.

    I did hear licensing cost is pretty hefty in this 60K figure.

    Thanks for your reply, Oppie, Joe, Enzo, & Rodney. Your information somehow made me little more relaxed.

    Do you know any good site to study what's available in the USA market currently?

    quick note - IBM will give away a lot of dough to get you to go with their products over a Sun box. Soon, I'll be knocking on their door, or else, I have three boxes that require 60K contracts on them to keep them up to date. Sun is just getting too expensive to run these days.

    Sounds like an AIX problem to me, woo hoo!

    Depending on the OS (what flavour of Unix) the amount of data, if it is a terminal style system, many other factors, geeze, over at Stillen, we had a dumb unix terminal system. that sucked to debug and port over, at BCBG we had a monster AIX box serving all our cad needs, and hundreds of users globally that also killed the IT dept to transfer it to a new system as well.

    It may sound like just moving data, but there are sad little dependencies and sometimes hardware keys or kernel customization to make what ever it is run.

    Ditto HP vs Dell.

    Quality is also way up while Dell's is just standard Dell perc card quality Update this driver then patch this one oh yes then do the hookey pooky. Now it should work.... Wait did you flash the bios First with the 6 xbe423df fixes..?


    HP has decent prices for long tern HW support. 5 years 24/7 4hr onsite for $2200 was 2000 less then comparable Dell.

    It's not the cost of Sun its the arrogrant *******s you have to hire to work on the stuff. 1997 called, now get to work.


    IBM is still the way to go if you have the money.
