Shield relocation

I had already bought my 348 and stuck shields on it before I found F-Chat. So I was clueless about the shielf location (and a lot of other things on my 348). I placed them too low on the fender. This has bugged me for a long time. It was one of those things that I had on my "to do" list but when you are working on CEL's, it did not seem that important. But now that I am getting those pesky CEL's taken care of, I decided that it was time to correct this issue. I was worried about scratching the paint. I looked around for info on the best way to remove them. In the end, the thing that worked best was using 50 lb test fishing line, 3M adhesive remover and a pair of leather gloves. I sprayed some adhesive remover around the top of the shield. Then a took a piece of the fishing line and wrapped each end around a couple of fingers on each hand while wearing the gloves. I then placed the fishing line just under the upper corner of the shield and started with a back and forth "sawing" action while pulling down slightly. I could then work the line across the top of the shield. I stopped periodically to spray some more adhesive remover on it. The remover acted like a lubrication agent that helped the line move through the tape. After removing the shield, I found that the line never touched the car. It cut between the tape and the shield. So if you are needing the do this, it is not hard to do. I looked around to see what the correct shield location was but found that I liked the look better with it moved back about an inch or so from the "correct" location. I did place it at 1.25 from the top of the shield to the fender crease. I am happy with it now.


Note: There is a 2 year gap between the two pics. Even with this small pic, you can see several changes I have made on my 348. 1) yellow brake calipers and black rotors. 2) painted fender well. 3) steering wheel spacer installed. 4) padded Ferrari seatbelt pads.

Oh yea, please ignore the large bug splattered on the mirror. I have been out for some late night test drives lately. She is getting a wash job this weekend.

Great I need to do this on my 355 as they are a bit to low. I was going to try your method so I'm glad you posted it. At least now I know that it will work rather than hoping it would work. The bug just adds charcter! You should never apologize about using your car

I like the Yellow calipers thats on my list for this winter.

 

I don't want to take credit for the removal method. It was mainly info I got from Yoshi's website on his shields. I just fleshed it out a bit.



Yes, I really am happy with my yellow calipers. I will be posting up my DIY steps shortly. Lots of pics still to go through and to write it up so that it makes sense.

 

Great improvement. It's so important the shield gets that beautiful bend of the fender.

Agreed. Looks much better! Mine are a bit high, but also back closer to the door crease. To my eye, it just seemed to fit a wee bit better.

Thanks guys! Also, thanks for not ragging on me about it before. Being a newbee can be rough in some circles especially when you come in making a mistake on something. Some people enjoy pointing out mistakes made by others. Not to help but to make themselves feel better. Having my shield in the wrong place was not a huge deal but the abence of disrespect plus the support I receive reminds me of how great this group of people are on this forum. You only want to help, not ridicule. To help give back to this group for all the help I have received, I now automatically take pics of anything I do on my 348 just in case it may help someone else.

I've always used a hair dryer to remove adhesive backed emblems, etc. Heat it carrfully, and the adhesive will release. Then, just clean it up with a citrus-based cleaner that will not harm the finish.

 

Well, Yoshi says to not use a heat gun or hair dryer so I did not want to chance it. I take it that with these shields, the heat could damage them.
