shift linkage

Sounds like you will likely need to remove the side covers and get a visual.

 

It can be reengaged by feel but you need to know what it looks like in there to do it.

In the future be sure it is in either 2nd or 3rd before removing the bolt or loosening the lock nuts.

To adjust at no time do you need to remove the bolt. That is done to take it apart, not adjust it.

 

If it were mine, I would pull the side cover off. You have to pull front header on the left side of the engine, then the motor mount and you can get to the cover bolts. It is a great time to adjust it all and get it perfect; you can get the shift shaft out too if you choose to replace the seal (if it is leaking). Message me if you want to use a modern seal for it, I updated a carbon fiber adapter to use the 512 seal so you NEVER leak there. A good time to see how it all works. It took time but my shifter sits dead center vertical and horizontal when in neutral and perfectly centered in the gates without rubbing.

 

loosen the adjustment screw from the linkage
put in 2nd gear at the gearbox, put in 2nd gear at the shifter. tighten the linkage again and test before you remove the side cover

 

If no one steps up with a picture, I can take one. I currently have three TR engines out right now- one of them for sure has a loose side cover plate, since I purchased the car with the actual shifter as a loose part.

 

not go into 2nd with the shifter or when you disconnected the linkage then not get into 2nd?

but why not in neutral?? when you not get in neutral you also never can get in any other gear. because only from neutral you may get in other gears

 

You are never getting it repositioned with the bolt in. Put it in your tool box and leave it there until you get it fixed.

 

Its in the shop manual. If you are working on the car you must have one.....correct?

 

I keep a photo on my iPad just for this issue. Still., removing and resetting may be the best way and does not take too much time.

It could very easily be in 1st, 2nd, 4th or 5th.

 

If he looks at this picture and understands the relationship of the parts it takes less than a minute to correct the mistake. Have done it a hundred times. It is so easy I don't even bother trying to avoid it anymore.

 

when you shift from one gear to the other you always have to go over neutral. but he says he can not get into neutral. so I wonder???
