shifter stuck

    New owner of 1987 328gts, and shifting from rev to 1st shifter stuck in 1st but trans in rev any ideas?

    Without looking at it it's difficult to know for sure. It sounds like one of the control forks (inside the gearbox) has broken or come loose and slipped (a lot). I would start by examining the external linkage first but it looks like you might need to open up the gearbox and sort things out.

    mounts are new .linkage ok, i did notice a couple of times i would shift to rev and let out clutch and it felt like it was in neutral. then shift into another gear then to rev and it would work

    I have to agree with 2NA, your control fork(s) may have broken or loosened. You may actually be trying to shift into two gears at once. Also, your reverse idle gear could have a problem (much less likely). Drain gear oil and remove tha pan; check the condition of the forks...this is simple and worthwhile to check. When all is opened up, have someone shift for you while you monitor...you should see any interference. If everything looks intact in the gearbox, replace the silentblocks and realign per the WSM.

    Ferrari has a rather Walt Disneyesque way of locating shift forks with a clamp rather than a more positive locking method. It's possible for one or more parts to shift out of critical alignment and if something actually gets loose, you can have unpredictable results. It's a good idea never to force the shifter into gear.

    The good news is that unless something is actually broken, it can be put back in order. There are special tools (expensive, not many shops have them) for aligning the forks but if you know how it's supposed to work it can be put back without some of them.

    These pictures are of a 246 Dino but the 328 is similar. Notice the witness mark where the "slip" occured.

    Be carefull. It is easy to fix if nothing is broken and just slipped loose.

    DO NOT LOSE the ball bearings and springs on the driver's side of the tranny.



    NOW, while you are there, silent blocks in the shift shaft and oil sump seals COULD be changed. Think about it before you bolt it all back together as you are already half way there.

    before disassembling the whole tranny ...go the easy way first...;)

    apply some silicon spray to the shift gate and the bottom of the shift stick
    see what happens...if nothing mechanical, lubrication may help

    double check your shift shaft alignment !

    possibly replace front & rear shaft bushings

    Don't forget that you need to remove the oil temperature sensor and the oil level tube first !

    Dropped pan & it all looked good, disconnected shifter and there was limited movement,So I took off gate and found a penny from earlier owner. problem solved with all of your help. thanks to all again shimmydr.

    Too bad you did'nt check under the console first! Now since the pan is off, along with the console, you are half the way towards replacing the shaft seals and silent block. As previously mentioned might as well do it.
