Gordon Baxter, author of 'The Bax Seat' series in Flying, did a couple of columns on an inadvertent flying kitty. Seems a pilot at the Tecumseh airport near here took off in his Tri-Pacer with his cat on board.
Shortly after takeoff, he heard a noise and saw that the baggage door was open. Fearing the worst and not seeing his cat, he made a quick circuit and landed. He was amazed to see the cat waiting for him at the tie down.
Not believing it himself he told a couple friends, placed the cat in the cabin and took off. Just after takeoff, the cat scrambled rearward, somehow opened the baggage door and was gone.
This story and other aviation-related urban legends were investigated by Baxter, who travelled to Tecumseh and met the owner. The owner did verify what happened, and related how he later took a short length of aluminum stove pipe along and cracked the door enough to put the pipe outside.
The cat was then pushed into the pipe, as he flew over the airport with many local pilots observing. According to them, the cat appeared to stabilize and land, and seemed to enjoy the jump and was eager to go for another.
