Slicks?

FIA hasn't confirmed this yet, but i do hope we'll see the return of slicks in 2009.

 

Seems a no-brainer to me, with a single supplier. Legislate tyres hard enough to last all race and see braking distances lengthen, making for more overtaking. Better still a tyre that has to last all weekend, or two or three weekends. Legend has it that Jim Clak found a "magic" set of tyres once, and used them for several races.

But no, Max and Bernie are so far gone with their "pit stops make for spectacle" nonsense that we'll never see such an obvious solution to the problem of no overtaking. Just as we will never see wings go away, as much as it would improve racing, because they are such good billboards. For heaven's sake, the size of the airbox was increased solely to make more room for adverts.

Pit stops for spectacle works for me.
I am up for anything that bunchs the field and allows easier passing. Hard tires, no aero ( or better yet aero that promotes drafting ), whatever. Hey; how about push-to-pass ?
I would think full slicks would be an attempt for more traction not less.

 

Yes, but that's partly what we want - more mechanical grip, less aerodynamic downforce.

I'm a big fan of less grip. Power slides out of corners, drifts into and through. Locking wheels under braking.
Watching from the couch of course.

 

Jim Clark used Dunlaps, who are know to make special tires for their favorites. It wasn't unusual for them to bring those special tires, with standard markings to the races. They used to do this at the AMA races frequently, until they got busted for it.
