"We had just sat down for breakfast on a quiet Sunday morning. The surf was almost inaudible as it lapped up on the sand. We could hear a Killdee calling somewhere on the beach when a deep rumbling vibration briefly announced the presence of something not of our remote location on Siesta Key. Before we could respond to the unknown and subtle intrusion into the silence, our little house was rattled.....pummled by the thundering sound of a monster that seemed to be eminating from the ground and the air at the same time.
Mom sat with mouth and eyes agape in sheer terror. I leaped from the table and ran outside to see a flight of four B-17's flying away into the Gulf of Mexico at an altitude of not more than 150 feet. When I returned to the table mom asked, " What in God's name was that!"
'B-17's,mom, four of them, really low!"
" Well, they must be lost to be flying that low!"

It was early spring, 1942, and our first introduction to the war in Sarasota, Florida. The B-17's were soon replaced by P-39's at Sarasota Airbase and they were soon replaced by P-40's which were eventually replaced by P-51's. For four years the air was full of everything the airforce had. One big air show.
The above is out of the account that I am writing about my times with airplanes and hanging around for so long.

Roy, I have 277 double spaced pages, something around 70K words and I figure that I'm half way there. I write almost every night (then re-write the next night), paint almost every day, too. I am by no means an author, I am simply trying to recall everything that I can and put it down in, hopefully, an interesting and entertaining form. From those who have read it so far, I have had postive comments but I entertain no such hopes from an editor. I'm doing it anyway.
