Speaker Fix

Just thought I would pass along a great fix I found for the optional factory hi fi subwoofer on our cars. Mine was shot. (Sounded like a grown up on a Peanuts television episode.) I started looking into a factory replacement however the part is a special order item with a cost of over $400.00. Before spending that much money I did some research and found a company that actually rebuilds speakers. I simply sent it to them, they restored it and sent it back to me.

$68.00 charge from The Speaker Exchange in Tampa and all good to go.

Check via google, there are usually more than one speaker repair shop in most larger cities. Depending on the damage, it can require just a new surround, up to full replacement of the voice coil, surround and cone. Prices depend on the size to be repaired, but car speakers are usually $25 to $40 due to their small size.

the crackling coming from mine was repaired and here is how. Remove the grills, turn on the music and look at the speaker....the cone has probably come loose and you can clearly see it vibrating at the very outer edge. I used dental picks and gently lifted the outer ring from the surface, took a qtip and applied RTV sealant behind the surface to re-glue it down. Once you get the sealant on, gently smooth it out and let sealant cure....a day should be good. I would be careful and lift even the areas that have not yet separated and do the whole way around. Turn the music on and you should see no vibration and hear no crackling. I first thought my speakers were blown....they sort of were, but it turned out to be a very effective low cost repair. That was last year.
