    When driving on smooth roads I have no problems it is all very comfortable .........but when I encounter a road with rough tarmac I get a sort of knocking from the front which sounds like something is loose.....

    Could this be a control arm problem and how serious is it if it is ......

    Could be. Not serious from the standpoint of safety. They will knock when only slightly loose, long, long before it is loose enough to be a safety issue.

    Wouldn't wait until it becomes too loose. Just get the car lifted and check all suspension and steering parts for play including front shock absorbers.
