The engine.

The interior.

The serial number.

The location.

The builder.

The wheels look like they might be the current available version of the Gotti wheels that John Corbani had on his Dino (Johns were "+ 2s - 16" with 8 to 9" width rims with the correctly allocated offset - offset changes with width to keep the steering geometry and bearing points the same - not just to provide enough brake and suspension clearance). I was interested in getting a set like the ones that John had and contacted Gotti. The only version that they said that they had with the correct offsets were ones that looked those pictured above. I don't know about the rest of the car - but it looks like a kit to me too, but from a distance it certainly isn't as bad as some of the other Dino kits that surface from time to time. Who knows - maybe it is not a kit - but where are the side markers and turn signals? And, the wheel base looks shortened . . . .

 

Where's the picture of the most interesting part?? The 24V engine that is..

 

The Lancia Stratos engine idea is fascinating. Pictures and commentary please, and congratulations, it was probably not easy.

On the other hand, the body... I don't think it's a kit, but rather a heavily modified original: The wheels, the roof, the bumpers, the headlight fairings, the horse that doesn't belong...

I am willing to bet it also has a horse on the horn button.

P.S. If you add 100 hp to a Dino, wouldn't a more rigid and less valuable coupé make more sense?

 

Yep... Horse on the horn button. Also interesting instrument panel modification. I think it's the same one.

The Dino doesn't have the Stratos engine, the Stratos has the Dino engine. The Dino engine was homologated by Enzo by Fiat in the 2.0 liter variety first, then later bumped to 2.4. It was used in the Fiat Dino Spider and Coupe as the production numbers would meet the homologation requirements. If you run across a Fiat Dino in the junkyard, you've also run across a Ferrari engine.

The radical Stratos project wasn't until much later. There were 479 produced, all with the 2418cc Dino engine. Fiat owned Lancia and a chunk of Ferrari by this time, so these engines were floating around all over the place and they were well sorted by this time.

The last iteration of the engine showed up in the last of the Dino 246GT's.

 

We are discussing a conversion to 24 valves, as in latter Stratos competition models.

You will find that most people on this forum do not require elementary Dino history lessons.

 

Despite my usual knee-jerk pucker-butt purist beliefs....... I kinda like it.

I like to think it was done a long time ago when a good Dino was a $15,000 car and you could get a rusty hulk for $5000 to do this to.

Maybe somewhere in the other threads it said when it was done?

I'd have a bit less patience/sympathy if it was done recently, at a time when most folks sensibilities about originality of these pretty little cars has sharpened.

I purchase this California car in the early 80's for $24,000, chassis number 5978. I am the 2nd owner. The Stratos 24 valve engine bits were purchased also in the 80's from Alex Moore of Rosso Corsa Ferrari in the UK. I think it looks great. It is obvious that I am not a purest. Most of the parts I took off the car, bumpers, etc. I sold. I wondered what kind of comments would be from you guys, interesting.

As discussed in other threads before the Stratos Carbs (Weber IDF) does not fit under the Dino hood. How have you solved this problem?

 

without the bumpers and with those wheels, it reminds of the car in "cars" you know, "piston cup" Paul Newman et al. Think white wall tires. Love it!

It appears there is a hole cut out of the engine lid to clear the Weber carbs.

I like it too....with the exception of the wheels, although functional?, they just aren't doing it for me aesthetically, perhaps some repro 'campy's' that are larger might be a better choice, just an opinion, looking forward to seeing DETAILED photos!

....and while I am opinionating, not a big fan of the mirrors either - sorry :/

just two simple changes and I would be a BIG fan

 

Look at the mirror attachment, theres more thought in this than one would think?
