You might try to look into different tablets, my friend got something like the x41, only thing is, no cd drive, so you might be better off with this one. Good luck on the search!

    I am inclined to agree.
My economics professor suggests the Fujuitsu tablet.
She's hot, therefore her opinion is valid... :D

If you're into Apples, there is a company selling a converted-to-tablet Macbook calling it a Modbook.

I read in PC magazine about the Lenovo X60...Thanks for the heads up! The Lenovo is pretty nice...and is about the same price. My limit is $1,500...I'm trying to keep it lower around there. Thanks again...the search continues!

I have a Acer TravelMate C300 and I love it. It's a full size convertible. Unfortunately, Acer is no longer selling individual units and has even taken down the info from their web site. I think the min. purchase is 100 units???

    Hey bud,

    - Gateway® CX210X
    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86ghz (2mb L2 cache)
    Vista Home Premium
    1gb ddr2 667mhz ram
    80gb 5400rpm hdd
    14" screen
    cdrw
    a/b/g wireless
    999$ without the extra crap.

    - Gateway® C-120X
    Intel Core 2 Duo ULV 1.06ghz (2mb L2 cache)
    same ram
    same OS
    same hdd
    12" screen
    cdrw
    same wireless
    1499$

It doesn't say how much either weighs, but the one that is more expensive is more expensive because I'm guessing, because it's lighter.

IMO it's not worth it. Do you really need a tablet?

If I were getting a new laptop it'd be an Apple, IBM or HP.

What are your needs? If you're also gaming you'll want a decent graphics card.

From the looks of it, neither of those laptops offer a dedicated graphics card, they'll probably use the Intel Integrated GMA 950 (it isn't bad, but it's like comparing a BMW 530i to a Mercedes SLR. the latter is just so much more powerful!).

Is there a reason you can't go for the Lenovo X60? It's a very SOLID machine. You won't find a doubt of quality about it.

If you know a college student, you can get 10% off on EVERY Apple product, so if you just need a machine that gets the job done you can get a Macbook. 5.2lb. 13" screen, very portable.

Like I said, let me know what you're trying to accomplish, and we'll configure the right tool for the job. I just feel that those Gateways are too much $$ for not enough oomph and quality.

Vraa, thanks very much for your info. Well, I do like tablets because I can design things, jot down notes, and there seems to be more in them. With a normal clamshell laptop which just opens up, I can't draw on the screen, which is a down side for me.

The computer will be used primarily for designing and using autocad and maybe some video games like The Sims. Thats pretty much the basic. The Lenovo Is nice...But does it Have an internal drive so i can load movies, cds, things of that sort? I would have to buy an Ultrabase, which costs a lil more, That is a lil out of my price range cause the lowest price one is about $1,519.00...not to meantion the ultrabase which is $179.00. $1,300 is the max I can go in purchasing a computer, and the HP Pavilion tx1000z is now about $1,099.00 which is acceptable.

I have read some things about the Lenovo, which was pretty much all positive. I'm still torn between all these nice computers...but thanks again for your input. Its greatly appreciated!

Right now my primary machine is a Motion Computing LE1600, although I might be trading it in for an LE1700. I prefer the pure slate vs. the convertible, but I do like the Fujitsu T-series lifebooks. The LE1700 can have up to a 60GB HD and 4GB of RAM.

Avoid the Modbook if price is a big deal -- those things are $$$$ :(

I can't see if the X60 comes with an optical drive -- no where on the site does it say it does which makes me kind of sad. I was hoping for that price they'd include all of that! :(

MGD - Whatever software that runs on Mac OS X would be the software you'd use. I guess Photoshop, Inkwell, Final Cut if it's useful, etc.

Patrick - I've heard a lot of good things about the Fujitsu, I need to get me hands on one someday to give it a test drive. How is the quality?

I think I need one of these things for uni... depends on where I go. I know VT requires one for their engineering school.

I'd be a fool to buy now when I'll be in the class of 2012, technology moves too fast! If I were to buy one now, I'd buy the Lenovo X. Looks very nice, I hear the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads and such are indestructible.
