With the advance in being able to stream movies from websites like Netflix's Instant Play, my question is this, why is TV not being streamed online.

I understand there are a few connections. Instead of getting a Slingbox, is there anything available on the market today that allows this?

I have no TV, and just my laptop, so I find that it would be helpful to watch some shows on my computer instead of buying more electronics, seems like the direction phones headed long time ago, they are no longer phones, they are portable computers.

    TIA :)

Most networks stream their shows from their sites. Also, Hulu has tons of shows and movies.

There are a few sites out there....the best ones are atdhe.net and Justin.tv

for Justin.tv, it's difficult finding a streamer that you like, but once you do you set. fyi: http://www.justin.tv/trash_your_tv8# is a good streamer

Do you mean live streaming? You can do that, try searching "pc tv tuner" into google and see what you find. I know one Mac option is eyeTV.

I'm in the same boat, except opposite. I have a TV just no cable. I haven't had many problems since you can literally find any TV show online now, either to download or to stream.

I know about Hulu, I went to high school with the creators sister.

And yes, Chris. But, don't the newer computers have TV tuners built into them? I want something that will wirelessly let me watch TV.

IMO, DirecTV COX TimeWarner and the others should allow people to $ubscribe on their site and have full access to all programming just as if they were watching tv (with guide and dvr features).

I have the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q and am impressed by the quality. I think what you are talking about is watching streamed content, and in that case there is nothing available. And on-demand choices are very limited.

Video requires tremendous bandwidth to broadcast a show where as radiowaves are a completely different mechanism.

Most USB tuners will allow you to get the unencrypted QCAM channels from your cable (not dish) provider. If you plan on watching HBO, you'd need a Slingbox with a cable card.

The mobile delivery options are FloTV and then the lame on-the-phone streaming and for many years now, the phone content have been snippets of shows, not longform programming. Like the modules inside windows media center. internet tv my ass!

I recently picked up and ipad and spent the last week testing various apps. I must say that the Netflix and ABC TV apps are fantastic for streaming movies and TV shows. Watched several episodes of "Everyone Loves Raymond" from the hotel and it looked great. This was while hooked to my Verizon Myfi.

You may be referring to IPTV. Internet into your home including TV and voice over the same pipe. Hugely popular overseas and a bit here in the U.S. With ATT U-Verse.

so any of you... tried to use a laptop to stream tv to other devices or laptops.

I would like to know, If I am able to use a tv cable and stream it out to other uses via a computer or streaming server ? I believe this might be illegal. Have been thinking of doing this, as Asia loves US tv and its sitcoms. Am thinking of doing it.. but not sure if its feasible.

    Thanks in advance

You might be able to with a live transcoder, or something like Flash Communication Server or Flex. Mostly if it is broadcast, not cable content, Qcam cable perhaps as well. I am saying in theory for now because I have considered it but not thrown myself at it.

Right now I am trying to figure out the DirecTV DVR and creating a VPN tunnel so I can watch my shows while I travel, until I figure a way to make that content port to my iPod.

    It's a never ending battle.

You can use the Slingbox adapter to your DVR and iphone app to do that.

I believe the cost is in the bandwith! I might be mistaken

Sure it does. It will pretty much work with anything with a video output.

What audio/video devices are compatible with the Slingbox?

    * DVRs (TiVo, ReplayTV, DISH, DIRECTV etc.)
    * Satellite Receivers (DIRECTV, DISH, etc.)
    * Cable Set-Top Boxes (Comcast, Cox, Time Warner, Cablevision, etc.)
    * DVD Players (Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, etc.)
    * VCRs (Aiwa, Hitachi, JVC, etc.)

"The Slingbox PRO with HD Connect Cable and the Slingbox SOLO allow you to watch and control your HD content via component inputs. These Slingboxes physically link to HD devices and take a 720p or 1080i signal and down-convert it to standard-definition resolution before streaming it over the network. The Slingbox and SlingStream technology adapt the compressed video stream to match the available network and Internet bandwidth to provide the best possible video quality, whether running on a supported computer or compatible mobile phone. While these Slingboxes do not stream HD video at 720p or 1080i, they do allow you to access both your SD and HD channels seamlessly, and the HD component video content results in a stream that looks great."
